DS2 I'm glad I got to read that post, I thought you stated it very well. This debate between crate/open will continue until racing is dead and at the rate it's going that's going to be way sooner than any of us want to see. When it comes to crate late models did anyone ever think, sure they're great fun to drive and far more affordable than supers but they're just not that fun to watch? Just because a class grows in car count doesn't mean that fans have to be interested in that class. More affordable for the racers does not have to equate to popularity with fans, I don't understand why the pro-crate crowd can't acknowledge that fact. Four cylinders are fun to race, I've driven one a few times, it's a blast but as a race fan I could really care less about seeing them. Sometimes they put on a good show but to DS2's point the show can only be so exciting when you're watching the slowest cars at the track. Long term, slower cars aren't going to draw more fans, not in today's world.

I like the idea of the class but the fact you have to buy a brand new motor from one specific dealer sounds more like "put more money in my pocket" than "lets start an affordable sprint division". I will say I seen some pretty good crate division races this year though, so not real sure why so many people complain about watching them.

Beating another dead horse here, but if the local promoters would have actually worked together with a common set of 305 rules, that division would be flourishing and the wingless crate deal may not even be hitting the ground.  I for one look forward to the division, as the BOSS Wingless Sprints always put on a good show, so this should be good, but people need to be realistic with car counts.  It's going to start light like the RUSH Mods did, but their counts are very strong now.  Hopefully the Sprints will do the same.  Might even see some long "retired" drivers wiggle back out of the woodwork along with some next generation drivers from well known local racing families.

The reason the BOSS series is doing so good is there is almost no rules. No shock, tire , engine etc. must look like a sprint car and be safe. They are able to put any parts on that are available to them, not dictated you must run ALL my parts kind of car.

Another thing that makes BOSS sprints so popular is non wing racing. So you can go out and spend whatever you want and the biggest factor no one can predict is the track prep. without that wing it does help level the playing field.

As for the new series. It's all part of the take over of racing. That's not good.

Personality I think one of the local tracks should of just tried a weekly run what ya brung wingless division. So much stuff sitting out there chassis and motor wise guys could of thrown something together and went out and had fun. Deerfield talked about doing it for the 305's but in all reality leave it open and give yourself the opportunity for more cars. That bullring is small enough that horsepower is not an issue but if a guy has a 358,360,406 ,410 or anything in between they have a place to use it. Wingless racing is huge west of here but not a single track around here runs them. I know some people are gonna say we don't need another class. I say what's going on around here is not working so it's time to try something new. The BOSS series is going great but it's just not here enough so travel costs become an issue. Need a local track to try it and see what happens. It's that or watch crates slowly take over. I for one would be in for a weekly open wingless division. I already have everything but nowhere to play and I'm short on the funding to go buy everything for RUSH. I'm sure their are enough others out there in the same boat as me to make it happen.

It depends on what day of the week it is. One day crate racing is a money saver, the next time someone brings up that it really isnt cheaper the same person comes back with "it was never supposed to be a money saver". Whatever argument is more convenient... If someone can't afford the price of supers, there are other classes. Crates aren't the only thing keeping guys in racing. I am happy that big blocks have picked up some guys stepping out of supers but that doesnt get nearly the attention crates do.
