(Pulaski, PA)...The 2018 race season has gotten off to a slow start for the Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC RUSH Racing Series powered by Pace Performance speedways. In fact, a few of the tracks still have yet to get in a show or feature event for their RUSH divisions. Hopefully with the calendar changing to June, things will dry out and racers and tracks alike can concentrate on racing instead of watching the weather.
Last Friday night Outlaw Speedway completed their fourth RUSH Late Model event of the season as Jason Knowles bested a season high car count. Chad Homan was second over Brian Knowles, Wayne Robertson in his season debut, and J.J. Mazur. This Friday night at the Dundee, NY oval it’s the second annual "Gary Montgomery Memorial" paying $2,000 to-win for the Sweeney Touring Series.
New York's Brewerton Speedway held their first of three RUSH Late Model Weekly Series event last Friday night. Kevan Cook, a former weekly competitor at the track in the IMCA Modifieds, picked up the win over Sean Beardsley and Chris Fleming. Canadians Charlie Sandercock and Kyle Sopaz made the trip down and finished fourth and fifth. The RUSH Late Models appear next at Brewerton on June 22.
One of the new RUSH Late Model weekly-sanctioned speedways in 2018 is Raceway 7. Like most tracks, the Conneaut, Ohio oval has battled Mother Nature. Darrell Bossard won the first ever RUSH-sanctioned event on May 18 and last Friday night saw Jason Genco victorious. It was Genco's first appearance since 2009 in an E-Mod. Genco led lap for his first RUSH win of 2018 over Bossard, Breyton Santee, Matt Latta, and Bruce Hordusky, Jr. Raceway 7 announced that the RUSH Sportsman Modifieds will make their first appearance in four years on Friday, June 15.
Also on Friday, Lernerville Speedway was in action and Tyler Dietz found victory lane for the third time this season in the RUSH Pro Stocks as he held off Noah Brunell, Chris Schneider, Corey McPherson and Mark Sanders. The RUSH Sprints will be in competition this Friday (June 1) for their second visit along with the All Star Sprints. The RUSH Pro Stocks return to action on June 8.
For the second time in three races, Kyle Murray picked up the RUSH Late Model win Saturday night at Genesee Speedway. This one was worth $1,000 and came over Sam Pennacchio, Bill Holmes, Beamer Guzzardi and Wayne Robertson. A $2,000 to-win RUSH Late Model Tour event is next up at the Batavia, New York track.
McKean County Family Raceway has been taken over by the Bigley Family in 2018 and are running the RUSH Late Models weekly. The East Smethport, Pa. facility has gotten three shows in with Max Blair, Brad Mesler, and John Waters winning. Waters' win came on Saturday night and was worth $1,500 as part of the CPL Jason Dunham Memorial. Eric Wilson, Jeremy Wonderling, Paul Grigsby, and Andy Michael completed the top five.
Saturday night at Fulton Speedway, Chad Homan took advantage of a midrace flat tire of leader Chris Fleming and would go on to take the win in the 20 Lap RUSH Late Model Event. Bret Belden, Kevan Cook, Jason Parkhurst and Sean Beardsley completed the top five. The action returns to Fulton this Saturday when the Patriot Sprint Tour joins the weekly racing program.
Rain was a factor across the RUSH Series region on Saturday as Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway cancelled three hours before race time. Stateline, Winchester, Sharon and Jennerstown Speedways were all underway when the rains came and shortened each program. Stateline has yet to complete a race this season. Pittsburgh has only completed a feature event for the RUSH Sportsman Modifieds back on May 5 as Brandon Ritchey topped a record field of 23 cars at the "Monster Half-Mile". PPMS has announced they will make-up the RUSH Late Model feature from that night on Tuesday, June 12 along with a complete new show.
Sharon meanwhile had a strong field of 27 RUSH Sportsman Modifieds on hand prior to the rain out. It'll be a RUSH doubleheader this Saturday night as the RUSH Sportsman Mods return and will be joined by the first of two appearances by the RUSH Sprint Cars. Sprint Cars fans will also get to see the "410" Sprint Cars.
One feature that did get completed at Jennerstown was the 20-lapper for the RUSH Street Stocks that was dominated by Josh Coughenour. One of the last year’s biggest winners, Coughenour, ran away for the win over veteran Mel Wilt, who advanced from the fifth starting position. Rick Meehleib, who has been racing at Jennerstown since the 1990s, was third over young Zach Todaro and Opening Day 2017 winner, Aaron Van Fleet.
On Sunday, Chad Homan would have to settle for his second runner-up spot of the weekend as he was overtaken by winner Rob Pietz in RUSH Late Model action at Ontario’s Humberstone Speedway. Adam Ferri followed Homan with Sam Pennacchio and Jeff Dayman rounding out the top five. The week before, Homan topped an 18-car field at the Humberstone opener. Racing returns to Humberstone this Sunday with a full five-division show.
After three straight cancellations to open the season, Eriez Speedway finally swung open their gates on Sunday to a big crowd and packed pit area. Included in the 170 racers was a strong field of 25 RUSH Late Models. It was a familiar face in victory lane as Max Blair took top honors for his third overall win of 2018. Scott Gurdak, Kyle Zimmerman, Eric Wilson, and Darrell Bossard rounded out the top five. The RUSH Late Models are back in action on Sunday night. The May 20 rained out Sweeney Tour event has been rescheduled to June 10.
After a week off, Potomac and Dog Hollow Speedways have the RUSH Late Models on Friday night, Delaware International Speedway on Saturday night, while Old Bradford Speedway returns with a Five Star Racing program this Sunday including the first appearance by the RUSH Late Models. Dog Hollow, another new RUSH Late Model Weekly Series track, has completed two events with Max Blair and Clate Copeman victorious. Dog Hollow will be switching to Saturday nights beginning June 9.
