Rick Eckert of York, Pa., led all 30 laps to pick up his first career Ultimate Northeast Super Late Model Series victory by picking up the $3,000 check on night one of the Bob Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway. Eckert took the lead from the drop of the green from his outside pole starting position, and cruised to victory from finishing 4.766 seconds ahead of runner-up finisher Gary Stuhler of Greencastle, Pa.
Eckert beat polesitter Jason Covert into turn one and never looked back but the battle behind Eckert was fierce as Covert and Jeff Rine battled hard for the second position for the first part of the race before a yellow came out near the midway point for Andy Haus who slowed to a stop on the front stretch. Eckert pulled away on the restart and mastered his way through traffic the rest of the way. Gary Stuhler got by Rine on the restart and tried to run down Eckert but to no avail. Stuhler held off a hard charging Dylan Yoder at the end of the event to finish second.
Jason Covert was the fast qualifier on the night with a lap of 19.609 seconds. Kyle Lee was the hard charger as he advanced 12 positions from his 21st starting position to finish ninth.
Series action continues Sunday night at Port Royal with night two of the Bob Weikert Memorial. The event will be 35 laps and will pay $5,000-to-win.
