RAIN WASHES OUT LUCAS OIL LATE MODEL EVENT AT SHARON ON FRIDAY

(Hartford, OH)…The 90th anniversary season opener at Sharon Speedway will have to wait as heavy afternoon rain on Friday (April 12) forced the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and RUSH Sportsman Modified event to be cancelled.  All pre-sale tickets will be refunded.  This marked the third time in four tries that the April LOLMDS date has been rained out.   

 

The next event at Sharon will be an open practice on Saturday, April 27.  Racing resumes on Saturday, May 4 with the "Buckeye Cup" featuring the first of three appearances by Tony Stewart's Ollie's Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars along with the non-wing RUSH Sprint Cars.  Tickets are on sale for this event.

 

Sharon Speedway is owned by the Blaney, Weller, and Kirila Families and is a 3/8-mile dirt track located on Custer-Orangeville Road in Hartford, Ohio near the intersection of Routes 7 & 305. No it isnt. Orange County up in NY and Knoxville in Iowa are both older.

Why would the track (Sharon) not want to race!!!

They have raced before with MUCH more rain than that. Management just doesn't care anymore. For once the track wouldn't have been slick and dusty. Lucas should take their date from them and give it to a track that WANTS to race.

Remember when the Lucas series raced there after rain? I dont know how much rain they got this time, but go back in the archives and freshen your memories on how that went. I dont blame them one bit for not wanting to go through that again.

They had new clay then and it had rained that entire week before that show. Yesterday was a passing storm that ended 5 hours before showtime. With 2 divisions running they could have even started a little later if they had to. Instead they chose to be lazy and not even try. Attica got the same weather Sharon got, and Attica raced.

Promoters and track owners now days base their decisions on estimated crowd size and car counts.  Lucas gets paid no matter how many show up.  It's a business.   Fans feelings and opinions don't matter that much.  this is one nice facility and probably has a large overhead.  If they feel the crowd or count is gonna be low....better to cancel than take a lose.  I don't like it but it is the condition of our sport.  See you at Mercer Gearhead!!!

Keep this in mind...............If they ran and got a poor crowd which caused them to loose money, it would have been Sharon Speedway that lost money, NOT Lucas!!!   Sure Lucas wanted to run as they would get their sanction fee, which no doubt is pretty large.  And the drivers and race teams would have gotten their purse money.  The only "looser" would have been the Sharon Speedway!!   Some fans are always too quick to say "They could have run" regardless of the track.  All fans, drivers and race teams have to remember if the tracks don't make money they will close up and none of us will have a place to race!!!   Sometimes race track owners are big race "fans", but even those have to make a profit to stay in business!!

It was perfect weather for racing last evening, the crowd excuse doesn't even make sense. Everyone can read a radar, and the radar was completely clear in Burghill at 2:00. It would have been a packed house guaranteed.

Track History....Remember, this is the track that ran a non points race once  because of track conditions instead of a regular A-main.  A lot of fans were upset at that.  promoters can sense when fans change plans because of weather.  And I'm not sure,  kaw that this is why they cancelled,    but why not run unless you thought you were going to lose money???

I have attended every WoO LM and Lucas race there and it has rained for most of them, but the place has always been packed regardless. Sure the track has been rough for some of those shows, but the rain they got yesterday was nothing compared to what they got prior to previous shows. Plus it had been dry all week up to that point, so all that rain would have done was keep the dust down and maybe make the track racey for once. They blew a big opportunity to have an epic show and strengthen their late model racing rep. The bottom line is none of the top dirt tracks in America would have canceled yesterday because it rained a bit at lunch time after it had been dry the entire week before.

For what it is worth, Williams Grove canceled their All Star Sprint Car yesterday as well. Of course I have no idea how much rain they got compared to Sharon.  Here, north of Pittsburgh we had some heavy rain 1:30-2:00 but that was pretty much the extent of it.   With a bad hip, I wasn't up to going anyhow!!

There is no way I feel sorry for three millionaires and an idiot who are afraid of loosing money. The Apple fest rained out second weekend in September and the makeup is in May with half the divisions. They sure did keep our money though.
