David Gravel dominates field to win second Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup

NASCAR star Kyle Larson returns, but fails to repeat

 

Sarver, PA (July 23, 2019) In front of a capacity crowd on a Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night in Sarver, PA, David Gravel dominated the 40-lap, $25,000-to-win Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup XXVIII A-Main to score his second Silver Cup victory; having also won this event in 2016.

 

Gravel started on the second row alongside the Steel City Outlaw Tim Shaffer, (a two-time event winner in his own right), and quickly jumped to second on the opening lap.  After stalking James McFadden in the Kasey Kahne #9 ride for several laps, Gravel took the lead briefly on lap six and then for good on lap 15.  After a few early cautions, the final two thirds of the 40-lapper ran without caution and Gravel was actually better in lapped traffic.

 

2018 Silver Cup winner Kyle Larson dispatched McFadden to third on lap 20 and set his sights on Gravel, but was never able to mount a serious challenge. McFadden settled for a podium finish in third.  Both Brad Sweet and Donny Schatz finished in the top five after getting around Tim Shaffer late in the race.

 

The local stars of the Peoples Natural Gas DIRTcar Sprint division had a strong showing during the event.  Former track champions Tim Shaffer and Dale Blaney returned home with strong showings throughout the night.  As mentioned above, Shaffer finished sixth, while Blaney came home in 16^th.

 

Three-time and defending track champion AJ Flick transferred directly into the A-Main from his heat race, as did Dan Shetler and Brandon Matus.  Sye Lynch transferred through the Last Chance Showdown and Carl Bowser started the Silver Cup A-Main by virtue of a track provisional.  When the checkers waved, Flick was 19^th, Shetler 17^th, Matus 24^th, Lynch 22^nd, and Bowser 25^th.

 

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series will head east across the PA Turnpike for this weekend’s Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, PA.

 

The Peoples Natural Gas DIRTcar Sprints will be off this Friday, July 26^th as we host -Modified Mania featuring the BRP Tour Modifieds, as well as UMP E-Mods, Elite E-Mods and RUSH Sportsman Modifieds.  Fab4 Revved Up with Marburger returns of Friday, August 2^nd; the first of four straight Fab4s leading to Championship Night of Friday, August 23^rd.

Last I heard , nobody had claimed the 50/50.  Did they do a redraw???

Track looked pretty bad on tv. Looked like a few guys got caught up in some ruts

Late in time trials and late in race a rut developed half way through 1 and 2 just a little down from the cushon. 

 

If they were working hard thinking with their head cars could run above the rut in the center of one and two.  But any loss of thought and cars would get a little out of shape running the top through 1 and 2. 

 

Same with the very bottom mid way through 1 and 2.  A little lazy and forgot about it and the rut down the bottom a little out would grab the right rear tire and make the car want to hook the front to the right two wheeling it.  It was a very demanding track last night for both work doing thinking and concentrating and the physical end of driving. 

 

I think a lot of drivers not in tip top shape or maybe older, got tired not able to hold needed concentration through the whole race.

 

Couldn't see 3 and 4 well enough to offer an opinion but it appeared it also was contributing to the driver fatigue I seemed to see on the track.

 

Over all a damn tough and intense race.  

 

 

edit:  What also made it a 'total effort' race was the last lap pass by Brad Sweet to extend his points lead a little. 

 

Great driving last night by so many made it well worth getting screwed by the track with a special night of rip off $10 pit upgrade when the cost difference between reserved and pit was $6.  Thanks Lernerville for sticking it too paying customers and racers AGAIN far and above the WoO.  Figuring out a way to screw fans and racers out of a couple of bucks is a new high for any track i've ever been too.

 

It ain't the $4, it's the principal of the thing. 

 

 

To end this reply yes I complained about something but the racing I saw last night was worth the money I spent, even with being ripped off for a lousy 6 bucks.

Perhaps they should have not raised the admission prices, and called on you to make up the purse. AND had you come out and prep the track to your standards. SMH

I won't comment on your reply other then saying it speaks for itself.

 

 

If general admission was 35 the 10 to get in the pits was ok.  I bought one of their highest priced fan seats and paid more the the cost of a pit pass to get in the pits.  If there were seats less then 35 then the 10 extra for the pits could be considered by some as a bargain. 

 

Were all tickets scanned by the WoO scanners when you went in, even general admission seats?

 

Personally I'll probably never buy another reserved seat again at Lernerville.  Maybe that's what they want and it's a way to promote fans buying only general admission tickets?

 

I think the WoO has total control over online tickets sold.  Maybe reducing early purchase of tickets is a way to keep the WoO out of the ticket sales cash drawer?  I don't know.

You could look at it as getting screwed out of $4 or you could look at it as you paid $4 for a reserved seat to go along with your pit pass.  Most people that buy pit passes don't have a reserved seat and I don't recall there being an option to do that.  I guess it's just a matter of perspective.

 

Outlaw tickets aren't cheap, but I consider it a small investment in my happiness.  

 

Track was tricky for sure and definitely favored the well conditioned driver.  Only one DNF in the feature, so I wouldn't say it was overly rough.
