ANDREW GORDON BECOMES SIXTH DIFFERENT WINNER IN HOMAK PENN OHIO PRO STOCK CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES POWERED BY CAN-AM PICKING UP $1,500 WIN AT THUNDER MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY!
For Immediate Release
August 11, 2019 (Sandy Lake, PA) For a change, weather was not a factor and produced beautiful racing conditions on Friday, August 9th for the Homak Penn Ohio Pro Stock Championship Series powered by Can-Am in their first and only appearance at Thunder Mountain Speedway! Making the sixth different winner in as many races in 2019, Andrew Gordon had a dominating performance making his way from 7th to 1st in 7 laps to park his #25 Trick Shot, STAAR Trucking, STAAR Logistics, and BWP Bats sponsored Gordon Chassis in victory lane in the 25-lap feature!
34 drivers were split into two groups of 17 for Group Qualifying. Group A had Gordon at the top of the leader board with a lap time of 17.556 and second fastest time overall. Group B had overall fast qualifier with a 17.497 lap, Tim Bish #11B picking up $200 sponsored by SS Chassis & Supply, R & R Enterprises and Rob Shook.
Drivers competed in four heat races with the top 5 cars transferring to the A Main. Heat race winners included Gordon, Bobby Whitling #7W, Bish, and Fuzzy Fields #28. A last chance B Main gave 14 drivers an opportunity to make way to the A with 4 cars transferring. Rusty Martz #16M picked up the 10-lap B Main win. Two provisionals were granted to Gary Fisher #99F, Penn Ohio Series Member, and Gary Luzier #960, track regular to make up the 26 car field.
As a result of the redraw, Homak Penn Ohio and Thunder Mountain point leader, Bish #11B and Rob Shook #64 would lead a field of 26 cars to the green in the 25-lap race. Shook took the early lead over Bish on lap 1 with Fields and Bill Hurrelbrink #c8 in the 3rd and 4th position. Hurrelbrink would give up the 4th spot to Gordon on lap 4. As Shook began pulling away from the field, Gordon set his sights on Fields for 3rd and successfully made the pass on lap 6.
The first caution flag flew at the completion of lap 6, as 2nd place Bish experienced mechanical issues, slowing in turn 4. Shook and Gordon would restart the field side-by-side and it would take two attempts before lap 7 was in the books due to cautions. Gordon would lead lap 7 over Shook before the third and final caution flag of the 25-lap race waved for a 6 car pileup on the front stretch.
The restart belonged to Gordon as he rocketed to the lead over Shook. The battle intensified for the 3rd through 5th positions with Fields slipping back to 5th on lap 15, while Hurrelbrink and Whitling raced door to door for several laps before Hurrelbrink settled into 3rd. Front-runner Gordon dealt with lap traffic on lap 15 with a sizeable lead over Shook who had a comparable lead over 3rd place Hurrelbrink. 11th starter, Randy Wyant #11T would make his way to the 5th spot passing Fields on lap 21. The remaining 4 laps had Gordon cruising to the checkered flag with a 2.789 second finish over Shook. 7.047 seconds behind Shook, Hurrelbrink took the checkers for 3rd over Whitling with Wyant in 5th. 20th starter Jason Fosnaught #73 finished in 6th, Fields fell back to 7th, Chris McGuire #63 in 8th, Jeff Broniszewski #08 finished 9th, and Hunter Exley #23HJR rounded out the top 10.
As the point chase intensifies, the Homak Penn Ohio Pro Stock Championship Series powered by Can-Am will have a double feature event Saturday, August 17th at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. The 8th Annual Ed Laboon Memorial Race paying $4,017 has 3 laps of 30 in the books and will pick up at lap 3. The Dobs Non-Qualifier race will also take place paying $517. Both fields are set and will take place prior to the new Homak Penn Ohio event paying $1,000 to-win in the “Wee” Willie White Memorial.
