I do. I was out of town for much of Jerry's racing days, and never knew him personally.
My dad drove late models in the early 70's at North Hills, Butler, Mercer, Blanket Hill, and occasionally Tri City. We won the last late model track championship at Blanket Hill.

In terms of social media, message boards are outdated. Most of the people that used to be on here probably use Twitter or Facebook. Awhile back, he had stopped new registrations. People that couldn't get on likely just said the hell with it.

I had a picture of Jerry Matus that was a page out of a program nailed up in my grandpa's garage---that had to be early 80's
was the Jerry Matus that just passed possibly his son ---I can't imagine it being the same person
as for message boards in general ---I agree that the almighty FB has taken over but thats one place I refuse to go
our company has a FB page (or whatever you call it) but I have nothing to do with it ---it is handled by our website people----I don't even know how to view it
when it comes to racestud----I think eliminating folks like turkey sub and the legend took the hipe away
yes---they got out of hand quite a bit but that was the razzle dazzle that kept some interest --I used to feed controversy to folks like that just to wind them up a bit
i guess times change but I am with racer67x and Modpro----no facebook for me

There is too much nostalgic racing content on FB to be ignored. I use an assumed name so I don't have to really interact with anyone. The marketplace on there is decent as well. I have no desire to get on Twitter. Waste of time.

I agree with Skull. I do very little on FB, but the vintage racing content is fantastic. I always check out the Western PA Racing History group almost daily.

I check in here occaisionally and Hoseheads occaisionally, but the atmosphere over on that Western PA Racing History FB page is great.

Not a fan of FB, either, but I sure enjoyed that link. Like Brad, there is a lot of stuff on there, that I don't want to admit I remember. Thanks Tim. Saw my first race at Blanket Hill

You can't have an extended conversation with this many people on social media. They just aren't good for that. Message boards still work better for these kind of conversations.

You can on FB. But younger people like the latest, greatest so MB's don't seem to attract them like this board would have 20 years ago. Hell, I don't even text unless it's convenient for me or necessary. I will not carry on a frivolous, running conversation via text. Just call me for Christ sakes, lol.

Same with me. If you got time to punch keys, you got time to talk.

Several years ago I was down at the Matus business buying some used sprint car parts from Brent. Since they were busy I actually had my first opportunity to talk with Jerry. Grew up in the area and had watched him race for years but didn't know him. What was so interesting was the difference between three generations of local sprint car drivers. One of the things were the tires. Jerry told of how when he started you just didn't go over to the tire truck each time you may have needed a tire. His dad would tell him groove it some more. My thought that day was I had been fortunate enough to talk with not only a sprint car driver but also a sprint car historian with a sense of humor. Recently a friend and I got to talk with a legendary sprint car driver from eastern PA. When we left we both said we hope we get a second chance to talk with him again. So as 2021 begins, maybe find an old sprint car driver and start a conversation. I know you'll enjoy it. And next year on racestud, people will be talking about an interesting conversation they had with a western PA. legend. You missed Jerry, but there are others.

Jerry was very smart. To be mature and intelligent enough at 16 years old to get a pilot's license.....wow. Plus, I remember hearing years ago, probably late 70's, early 80's that at some point, he had built his own helicopter! He was a thinking man's racer, too. He didn't take chances trying to turn a fifth place car in to a winner. He took what the track gave him and they put the car on the trailer in one piece. I'm just disappointed I never got to meet him. One of a kind.
