After sitting idle since the 2013 racing season, West Virginia Motor Speedway roared back to life with the Iron Man Late Model Series and the Steel Block Late Models in competition this evening.  There were Eighteen (18) Super Late Models and Eighteen (18) Steel Block Late Models.  The Supers ran a 30-lap A-Main paing $8K to win, and the Steel Blocks went 25 laps for $2K to win.  Results as follows;

 

 

 

 

 

 

Iron Man Late Model Series A-Main:

 

 

 

1.     Jonathan Davenport (49) from 9th; won by a car length or so; led laps 30-31

2.     Devin Moran (9) led laps 1-20

3.     Drake Troutman (7) from 6th

4.     Colton Flinner (75)

5.     Ed Shuman (0)

6.     Tyler Erb (1) DNF; led laps 21-29

7.     Richie Edwards (4B)

Place was packed with fans. First show, I'm sure they have some bugs to work thru but it was nice to see it come back to life.

Just an honest question, looking real quick, it appears WVMS is about 20-25 minutes from Ohio valley... does that work well for one supporting the other or does it create contention amongst the racing community? Just wonder how both tracks sustain so close one to another... or am I wrong on the location?

WVMS is only running special events this season, not a weekly schedule.  They are only 8.7 miles apart, but on the local roads, it does take 25 minutes.  The two tracks seem to be working together.  Ohio Valley Speedway is a Friday night track, and on the two dates WVMS has scheduled Friday night shows, June 4th & August 6th, Ohio Valley is not running.

Davenport, Moran, and Flinner all went to the pits to change flat tires during the race.  Flinner broke on the last lap, otherwise he would have finished 3rd.

Tyler County Ohio Valley and West Virginia motor Speedway are all owned by the same family members. John is doing tyler county Cody is doing West Virginia motor Speedway and I believe they have a partner in rich Michael doing Ohio Valley

Super... thanks all. Very insightful! Tyler county... one of my favorites to watch! Short, wide and steep... many lanes of racing... tons of fun!

Are all located within an ear shot of each other and share the same field of cars. All of which are from the Ohio Valley region and surrounding areas. There isnt enough cars around to support 3 nights of racing in the top tier classes or even support classes for that matter. Although its great to see tracks open the saturating the area with race tracks will make them as a whole suffer because of lack of cars. It wont be long before the tracks that are the least hard on equipment will prosper in car count numbers and the others will suffer. WVMS advertises for the opening night for 6 months and 18 cars showed and 6 finished.
