Weekend Roundup & Upcoming events – Winners include Nick Kocuba at PPMS, Brett Hutira at Latrobe, Andrew Gordon at Hummingbird, Chad Rougeux at Hidden Valley, Chris McGuire at Sharon, John Boardman at the New Stateline and Curtis J. Bish at Tri City’s PSX “Ray’s Race”.
July 27, 2021 (Sandy Lake, PA) Questionable weather played havoc on Saturday’s racing action, but all of the Homak Penn Ohio Series’ tracks with pro stocks on the schedule were able to get their shows in and drivers picked up points toward the 2021 championship. Nick Kocuba was able to pick up win #2 at PMS by parking his #10 machine in victory lane. The #4 of Brett Hutira defeated dominating Jeff Broniszewski to secure his first Penn Ohio sanctioned win at Latrobe Speedway. Series’ standout Andrew Gordon found his first win of the 2021 season in the STAAR Trucking #25 at Hummingbird Speedway; while, Chris McGuire used the high side to hold off Curtis J. Bish in a battle for the win at Sharon Speedway, marking his first sanction win of the season in the #63. Non-Series members’ Chad Rougeux and John Boardman secured wins at Hidden Valley and the New Stateline Speedways.
Sunday’s PSX event at Tri City Raceway memorializing Ray Virgile had 41 pro stocks battling for the chance to take home $3,511. Ten pro stock drivers sponsored by R.K. Virgile participated in “Ray’s Race,” a dash for cash. Jackson Humanic, the 2020 Homak Penn Ohio Points Champion found victory lane and $300 in cash. Joe Stajnrajh came in 2nd taking home $200, while Ray’s grandson, Tyler Wyant, charged from his 7th starting position to finish 3rd paying $100.
Dominating drivers, Chris Schneider and Andrew Gordon made up the front row in the 30 lap A Main. Gordon took the early lead over Schneider leading the first two laps using the low side of the track. Schneider found the middle groove to be the better option and passed Gordon on lap 3. Schneider held onto the lead until a restart on lap 10 had Ray’s Race coordinator, Randy Wyant starting on the outside. Wyant took over the lead and was well on his way to the victory in his 11T machine when he unexpectedly caught fire on lap 29 bringing out the red flag. Wyant was unharmed; however, he was unable to resume racing.
Four-time Penn Ohio Series Point Champion, Chris Schneider inherited the lead upon Wyant’s misfortune. With a green, white, checker restart, it appeared that Schneider would walk away with the win; however, a caution gave Curtis J. Bish a second chance at Schneider in a repeat green, white, checker restart. Bish was able to sneak by when Schneider slipped high out of turn 2 taking over the lead and cruising the Tarr Motorsports #29 to the $3,511 victory.
With 15 sanctioning races in and 5 wins, Bish sits at the top of the Homak Penn Ohio Pro Stock Series powered by Can Am points with 1,503. After leading the points since the beginning of the season, Josh Seippel slips back to 2nd with 1,464 points. Brett McDonald is in 3rd with 1,426 points. Josh Blum is in 4th with 1,310 points and Chase Lambert in 5th has 1,183 points after 13 races. Rounding out the top 10 are Pat Fielding in 6th with 1,068 points after 12 races; Bobby Whitling in 7th with 1,057 points after 11 races; Matt Bernard in 8th with 1,051 points after 12 races; Curt Bish Jr. in 9th with 1,049 points after 11 races; and, Chris Schneider in 10th with 1,041 points after 10 races.
