Lake Takes McGarvey Memorial at Hidden Valley
For Immediate Release May 28, 2022

Clearfield, PA - Uniontowns Michael Lake finally found Hidden Valley Speedways Carns Equipment Winners Circle in the Shawn Sheetz McGarvey Memorial race Saturday night for the first of two visits by the Super Late Models this season.
Other winners included: Ryan Jacoby of Fernwood in the Semi Lates, Jim Animal Bloom of Curwensville in the Street Stocks, Tim Steis of St. Marys in the Amsoil Pure Stocks and Shawn Hadden of Punxsutawney in the Craigs Welding & Fabrication Four Cylinders.
The Super Late Models did a four wide parade lap to honor McGarvey, a former stand out late model driver who started his racing career at the bull ring but died unexpectedly in a work related accident in 2009.
Michael Lake and Denny Fenton led the field to the start of the seventh annual event, with Fenton making contact with the wall on the front stretch, causing his car to shoot into the field, resulting in a red flag to start the race that brought Winburne Fire Co. and Rescue Hose and Ladder Co. EMS to the crash. Thankfully everyone was ok. The crash collected Fenton, Bob Dorman, Billy Eash, Rodney Phillips and Dylan Fenton. Only Dylan Fenton, Dorman and Phillips were about to continue.
The complete restart, minus a few cars, saw Lake take the lead and set the pace. He had opened up a comfortable lead over Joey Petyak and Phillips when the caution waved on lap 13 for a spinning Rich Runyan Jr.
The restart saw Lake still in the lead and Petyak running second and Phillips was maintaining third, but Petyaks tires were starting to work, as he was reeling in Lake. Petyak was nipping away at Lake's lead and pulling along and drawing closer to making a pass each lap. They were side-by-side several times, when Jon Shipley had to throw the caution with four laps to go for a spun Cody Lucas. During the caution, Petyaks tires cooled down, which is what Lake needed. The final four laps it was Lake leading and taking his first ever HVS win over Petyak, Jeremy Ohl, Phillips and Dylan Fenton. Lake and Eash took heat wins.
The Semi Late Feature saw heat race winners Ryan Jacoby and Paul Ivory lead the field to Shipleys green flag and as the pair completed the first lap, they were still door-to-door. As they began the second lap, Jacoby was finally able to shake Ivory and take the lead, but Ivory wasnt about to let up, he stayed with Jacoby for several laps before he opened up an advantage.
A rash of cautions slowed the feature around the halfway mark. Ivory had the chance to take the lead, but Jacoby was a tad faster on the restarts as he held off the challenge to get his first win of the season. Ivory was a close second with Levi Ardery third, Justin Owens was fourth and George Bailey was fifth. Gary Little had a solid third going when he looped the #69 in turn two on the final lap.
Jim Bloom and Fuzzy Fields brought the Street Stocks to the green flag, with Bloom taking the lead and setting the pace. He led until lap four, when the caution waved. On the restart, Fields was able to sneak by Bloom for the lead, but on lap six, Fields became the next caution when a flat put him around the ring in turn three.
Bloom inherited the lead and held off all challenges from defending point champ Chad Rougeux. At the finish the top five were: Bloom, Rougeux, Mike Bordt, Allen Lamb and Cregen Brady. Bloom won the heat.
A pair of 34s, by virtue of their heat wins, led the Amsoil Pure Stocks to the start, with Tim Steis taking the lead from Mike Parmenter at the start and they ran like that the entire race, with third place being anyones race, as Joe Skinner ran third for a while before Tyler Rougeux was able to take the position and hold on until the end. At the finish it was Steis winning over Parmenter, Rougeux, Ryan Jones and Roy Gearhart.
The also exciting and entertaining Craigs Welding & Fabrication Four Cylinders saw Shawn Hadden get into turn one before fellow front row starter Bill Hassenplug as they jockeyed for position the whole race. Allen Robertson and Holden Heineman were tusseling for third spon most of the race as they weaved through the lapped traffic, but at the end it was Hadden getting the win over Hassenplug, Robertson, Heineman and Tanner Ogden.
Heat wins went to Hassenplug, Hadden and Matt Kephart.
