Philpot, Horstman, Smith, Hollon, and Richard all grab Bag the Cash at Waynesfield this Weekend.
With the amount of flips that occurred this past Saturday many that work at Waynesfield Motorsports Park and the fans alike were looking to the skies not for fireworks but to see if there was a full moon. The track would like to thank DARF for the free memberships, and Jon Nelson, Jared Horstman, and Chris Smalley for the free T-Shirts that they gave to the fans Saturday evening.
In the make-up Stock Car Feature delayed from two weeks ago the initial start would be called back when Tim Cornett and Kevin Gossard got together on the back stretch trying to move up from their starting position sending them both pitside. With the first lap complete and Jason Jimison taking the lead Greg Knock slowed on the track after his driveshaft came undone in turn three. For the next several laps Jason Jimison and Tim Bowen battled side by side for the lead with the Bowen Machine taking the lead. Seven laps into the race Mike Krueger and Chad Barr came together on the track sending them both to the tail and out of the top-five. The next few laps the attrition continued after Krueger put some body work down on the track causing his second caution of the race. Meanwhile under the caution leader Tim Bowen pulled off as well. As the white flag was displayed and Jason Jimison and Ryan Sutter were battling for the lead the 52B of Sam Bodine erupted into flames bringing out the red flag. Contact and confusion brought the top-two cars pitside handing Weasel Philpot the lead after he was sent to the tail after an incident on the initial start. In the end Weasel took his first win of the year with Todd Wright and Chad Barr finishing up the podium.
“The track was really fast tonight”, said the driver of the number 52 Stock Car. “I really need to thank my sponsors Jim May Auto Group and Ohio Crankshaft for all of their help.” “I want to thank my crew and my Dad as well for the help that they all give.”
First up for the regular evenings activities would be the Mini-Sprints and it was Jared Horstman and Chris Smalley earning heat race victories. The Minis it seemed would be like the Stock Cars before them and had many fans looking again for that full moon. Josh Yenser took the early lead but caution came out quickly when TJ Jenkins biked his car in turn one and nearly took the first flip of the evening. As Josh Yenser’s lead was growing Todd Wills got over easy just like eggs in the morning bringing the field back to the bumper of the number 2 machine. One more lap and it was then Hank Zimpfer’s time to turn over and this time it was three barrel rolls in turn one. At this time Josh Yenser was still leading over Jared Horstman and Jamie Paul. Just a few laps later under green flag conditions Jared was able to get by and leg out a huge lead over second place which was taken back when top-five runner Jamie Paul goes one up and does around five barrel rolls after contact with Chris Smalley. Once the green came back out this time it stayed out and Jared Horstman’s lead just got bigger and bigger. With five laps to go third place point man Rod Henning had to pull off the track with trouble but there was nothing to stop Jared Horstman from taking his fourth victory of the year.
“I really want to thank my sponsors again, Schroeder Steel came aboard this week to help out and also Miller Precision Industries who made me a new axle this week as well; I couldn’t do this without them.” “The track was just a little slick tonight but still very good.” “I also want to thank the track for all of the hard work they put into preparation and giving us a place to race.”
Time was up for our Non-Wing Sprint Cars and taking prelim honors were Dustin Smith, Mike Miller, and Corey Smith. Taking the early lead in the feature was Dustin Smith with top point man Mike Miller and brother Corey Smith in tow. Five laps into the race Dustin got a good look at the 1 of Jim Oglesbee who spun just in front of him bringing out the caution. On the restart Luke Hall and Mark Hery got by Kyle Conaway looking to join in on the fun the leaders were having as Mike Miller began to hound Dustin Smith for the lead. The top-four of Dustin Smith, Mike Miller, Corey Smith and Luke Hall began to pull away from the rest of the field and when the leaders got into lapped traffic Miller and Dustin Smith got together going through causing Miller to fall behind third place Corey. Thirteen laps in Luke Hall spun out trying to maneuver through the lapped traffic now having to go to the tail giving the fans something even more to watch on his march back up front. Three laps later as Dustin Smith was legging out a good lead Tony Main looped his car in turn three bringing the field to a slow down again. Dustin was leading over Corey with Mike Miller, Mark Hery, and Jon Nelson rounding out the top-five. With Dustin and Corey using the high side of the track the Miller machine starting to go above the cushion for position then settling for a move on the bottom using a slide job to regain the second spot. In the end nothing was had for Dustin Smith taking another checkered flag with Mike Miller and Corey Smith taking the rest of the podium.
Second Stock Car Feature was up and David Hollon took the early lead but it wasn’t long before there was a three-wide fight for P1 between Hollon, Tony Anderson, and Jeff Babcock. After splitting the two, Jeff Babcock grabbed the lead only to be slowed by contact between Mike Krueger and Jacob Hardesty after Jacob nearly stopped on exit of turn four. Under caution Kevin Gossard’s flat tire forced him pitside for the second feature in-a-row. Once racing resumed Tony Anderson and David Hollon raced side-by-side for several laps each wanting second place behind the dominating Babcock machine. Tim Cornett, Jim Post, and Jason Jimison, were also side-by-side going for fourth which then became third after Jeff Babcock pulled off the track, out of the lead with just five laps left in the race. With just two laps left in the race Tim Cornett overheated his motor spinning in turn four bringing out the caution and setting up a shootout between David Hollon and Tony Anderson. In the end David Hollon was just too much for Tony Anderson and Ryan Sutter.
“I loved the track tonight, it was in great shape tonight and so was my car.” I have to thank my crew, Carnivore Chassis and Century 21 Joe Walker and Associates for all of the help they give me.”
Final feature for the evening was the Modifieds and taking heat race wins were Tony Anderson and Stan Smith. Setting the early pace for the main event was Bill Keeler with a three wide battle taking place behind him for third place. As Stan Smith cleared himself of that battle he began to creep up on the Keeler car and second place running Gary Richard. Ten laps into the feature Brandon Jacobs brought out the yellow for a spin in turn four slowing the field down with Bill Keeler leading, then Gary Richard and Stan Smith. One lap later the caution would be displayed again this time for Steve Duty who had a flat left rear after contact with another car. The top-five for that one lap remained the same but when the green was displayed this time Gary Richard was able to get by Keeler and put himself into the lead. For the next few laps the top-seven were nearly nose to tail changing spots left and right wanted more just like all race car drivers do. Sixteen laps in though the night took a different turn for Stan Smith and Tony Anderson who were now in second and third when Stan spun on the front stretch giving Tony nowhere to go. The top-three at this point were now Gary Richard, Bill Keeler, and point’s leader Jon Henry. With two laps to go still in second place Keeler had a flat left rear handing him a loose condition giving the cars behind him an advantage coming off of the corners. In the end no one had anything for Gary Richard who took the checkers with Jon Henry and Brent Hole placing themselves on the podium as well.
“The track was a little rough in the heats, but absolutely beautiful for the feature.” “This place has been racy every week since Andy took over this year, and very fast for an old guy like me.” “John Staples (Lazer Chassis) is the car owner and I have to thank him for the opportunity to drive this house car as well as JMS Excavating for their help too.”
