JEREMY WONDERLING TOPS ERIEZ RECORD 55-CAR FIELD FOR 4TH HOVIS RUSH LATE MODEL FLYNN'S TIRE/GUNTER'S HONEY TOUR VICTORY OF 2024; OVER $32,500 IN VALUABLE PRODUCTS AWARDED FOR "MANUFACTURERS NIGHT" PRESENTED BY MSD

By Mike Leone

August 11, 2024               FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Erie, PA)...After two previous rain outs this season at Eriez Speedway for the Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series, the third time was a charm on Sunday.  Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Dirt Late Model Series presented by Born2Run Lubricants racers participated in the 13th annual "Manufacturers Night" presented by MSD Performance and shared in more than $32,500 in valuable products!  A season high 55 cars, which was an all-time record high car count at Eriez for Pro Late Models, were on hand for race #11 of the 2024 season!  Mother nature tried to intervene with periodic showers and drizzle throughout the day and evening, but the show was completed without much delay and the Alexander Family had the Eriez surface in excellent condition.  Also, competing RUSH Stock Car drivers shared in more than $6,000 of product giveaways for their "Manufacturers Night" presented by MSD bringing the night's total to more than $39,000!

Jeremy Wonderling completed the two-night $6,000 western Pennsylvania sweep for the Flynn's Tour/Gunter's Honey Touring Series.  It was a statement weekend for the four-time Series champion by passing points leader Brock Pinkerous both on Saturday at Marion Center Raceway and Sunday at a damp Eriez Speedway.  After getting by Pinkerous early in Sunday's 30-lap feature, Wonderling came out on top of the four-car battle after a late charge by track standouts Jason Genco and Dave Hess, Jr.  Wonderling doubled his leading win total this weekend to four for the season and closed the gap on Pinkerous in the battle for the $20,000 to-win championship.

"That's pretty lucky right there," acknowledged the 44-year-old Wellsville, NY driver regarding his flat right rear tire in Landrum Performance Springs victory lane.  "I noticed the last lap I wheelied really bad and figured I had a tire going down then it shoved towards the wall in three and four; I hoped no one was out there because I was using the whole race track to get to the checkered flag.  I knew Brock (Pinkerous) was going to be really tough and if I could get alongside him I'd have a good shot.  Brock again raced me with the utmost respect.  I sailed it into the top and I knew I could pick the gas back up in the middle of the corners and he'd have trouble staying ahead of me."

For the second straight race following the Dave Poske's Performance Parts "Feel the RUSH" Four-Wide Salute, Pinkerous jumped out to the early lead; meanwhile, Wonderling was able to get by Genco for second before a caution for Jim Rasey.  When racing resumed, Wonderling made the outside work nipping Pinkerous at the line to lead lap two.  Genco then followed getting under Pinkerous one lap later for second.

After losing third to Kurt Stebbins on lap four, Pinkerous changed lines and drove around Stebbins to regain third on lap six.  Two laps later, Pinkerous passed Genco on the outside to move back into second.  Pinkerous ran down Wonderling on lap 10 and the two ran side-by-side for the lead on lap 11 with Wonderling holding on.  By now, the top three distanced themselves from the field; however, eyes shifted to Dave Hess, Jr.  Hess started in eighth and dropped back to ninth early before moving forward.  Hess cracked the top five on lap eight then drove around Stebbins for fourth on lap 20.

As Wonderling continued to lead and the laps ticked off, Hess closed in making it a four-car race.  It was three-wide for second on lap 24 between Pinkerous, Genco, and Hess with Genco grabbing the spot.  Hess followed by Pinkerous on lap 25 for third.  One final Joseph J. Oliva Attorney at Law caution period slowed action with 26 laps completed and set up a four-lap shootout to the finish.

For the second straight night though the late race caution was just what Wonderling needed as he again went unchallenged in the final laps.  Despite his flat tire, Wonderling crossed the finish first by 1.477 seconds in his Close Racing Supply/Shuttleworth Auto Sales/Batavia Downs/955 Automotive/Penske Shocks by JDS/Swift Springs-sponsored #3J.  Thanks to Wonderling's 26th career win, he now trails Pinkerous by just two points in his bid for an unprecedented fifth Series title!  Wonderling also won four VB standard coil springs from Landrum Performance Springs and a 8.5 mm super conductor wires from MSD valued at $450.

"Financially is the biggest thing," remarked Wonderling on why he continues to run a RUSH Late Model.  "Where else can you go and racing for money like this?  You can have crazy money in a Super (Late Model) motor and go race for $3,000, but most times it's less than that.  This class is really competitive and doesn't break the bank.  It's definitely a lot of fun and the competitors are a lot of fun, and everything Vicki (Emig) does is great.  She's probably the biggest reason why I haven't called it quits a couple times.  She keeps sucking me back in somehow!"

Genco, who has three City Chevrolet Weekly Series wins this season at Eriez, finished second at the "Manufacturers Night" for the second straight year and earned $1,500 for his season's best Tour effort.  Genco also won two Hoosier Tires and a Racing Electronics Receiver Pro valued at $576!

"Brock (Pinkerous) is a good little driver and is going to be something to watch in the next few years," stated the 40-year-old Wellsville, NY racer.  "He's going to be doing it longer than I will be that's for sure.  My right rear (tire) gave up with maybe eight to go and I was trying to protect things.  Jeremy (Wonderling) was pretty good.  I saw his right rear started going flat and his car was falling over on the right rear and thought well maybe me and Dave (Hess) will be racing for the win, but congrats to him  It was a nice race with Dave and we had a lot of fun.  Thanks to Vicki (Emig) and Mike (Leone) for putting Manufacturers Night on.  It's pretty cool to get back all the money and prizes they give out.  There's not many Series that give back to the racers like they do."

Hess was third for his third podium finish in six starts this season on the Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Tour.  All three podium teams received a three-pack of Heritage Wine Cellars premium product.  "That was a fun race," expressed the 40-year-old Waterford, Pa. standout.  "I wasn't sure what was going to happen with that rain and thought we might be done for a minute so just to get the race in is awesome.  That was a great battle with Jason (Genco) at the end and I wish it was for the win, but there's some crazy competition in this class.  It's tough with these cars; with the (Super) Late Model I can just drive it and make something happen, but with these cars you have to set up them up just right to make it work; we're learning.  Hats off to these guys.  Thanks to Vick (Emig) and RUSH for working their tails off to give us Manufacturers Night- the giveaways were awesome and so was the racing."

Pinkerous dropped to fourth at the finish; however, it was his 9th top 5 finish in 11 races as he's yet to finish worse than 7th this season!  Pinkerous also won a MSD 6CT ignition control and blaster HVC coil valued at $535.  Josh Ferry, who won his first career Tour race two years ago at Eriez, was a solid fifth in his first Tour race back since flipping wildly at Lernerville Speedway on June 21 during the "Bill Emig Memorial" presented by Sunoco Race Fuels.  Ferry also won a custom wrap from Ontime Body & Graphic valued at $700!

3C Graphix Rookie-of-the-Year candidate, Kyle Zimmerman, went 12th to 6th for his second top 10 of the season.  Breyton Santee, who has a City Chevrolet Weekly Series win this year at Eriez, was seventh.  In his third race since joining Deller Motorsports, Christian Schneider had his best performance going 20th to 8th.  Chad Homan was ninth.  After taking a provisional, Joe Martin rebounded with a 10th place finish after starting 25th and earned the $50 Precise Racing Products "Pedal Down" Hard Charger gift card.  After getting as high as third early, Genesee Speedway and McKean County Raceway promoter Kurt Stebbins dropped to 11th, but did receive a spoiler kit from Ontime Body & Graphic along with a MSD 6CT ignition control and blaster HVC coil for a total product value of $650.

3C Graphix Rookie-of-the-Year candidate, Brad Mesler, ended the night by winning the 10-lap non-qualifier.  The 35-year-old Wellsville, NY driver led from green-to-checkered for the $200 victory aboard the Ken Sturdevant-owned, Sturdevant Trucking/Mesler Trucking/Rick Ruedeger/Ingram Engines/CRS/Mesler Farm/Martin Dynamics/Chub Frank Racing-sponsored #87s.  Mesler became the season's eighth different winner in eight races and amazing 80th different winner in 98 races run all-time!  Ben Easler, another 3C Graphix Rookie-of-the-Year candidate, went fourth to second.  Sixth starting Jacob Tubbs was third to maintain the points lead over Easler in the D&V Jewelers "Wheelman" Bonus Event Challenge Series.  Jacob Peterson was fourth over ninth starting Gary Youngs.

Pinkerous set fast time overall against the 55-car field in FK Rod Ends "Shock the Clock" Qualifying with a lap of 16.471 to earn $100.  Winning $25 FK Rod Ends heat races were Pinkerous, Wonderling, Stebbins, Genco, Santee, and Ferry.  The three last chance B mains were won by Shane Crotty, Schneider, and Andy Michael.  Pinkerous won his third Sunoco Dash of the season and received a $100 Sunoco Fuel card.

Winning the $100 Sunoco Fuel cards through the random drawings were Tour racers Easler and Martin, while the $50 fuel cards went to Dan Lepro, Scott Gurdak, Mason Jaquay, and Bobby Rohrer.  Tour regular Damian Bidwell was the first feature non-qualifier and received a $50 gift certificate for the Holley Performance Group for the "Nosed Out" contingency.  The Landrum Performance Springs BOGO certificates were captured by Wesley McCray, David Parker, Khole Wanzer, Chuck LaFleur & Jim Rasey.

The Flynn’s Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series will be off until Labor Day weekend, which will include a doubleheader of action.  Saturday (August 31) will be the first ever appearance at Hummingbird Speedway in Reynoldsville, Pa. for $3,000 to-win then on Sunday (September 1) action heads to Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, West Virginia for a $4,000 to-win event part of the "Hillbilly 100" with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series on FloRacing.
