(Sarver, PA)...The Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Racing Series presented by Born2Run Lubricants closed out the 2024 season on Saturday in spectacular style at Lernerville Speedway in the running of the 16th annual "Steel City Stampede". A total of 83 Chevrolet Performance RUSH cars were on hand in the three classes as the following drivers celebrated in the Landrum Performance Springs victory lane: Michael Norris (Hovis RUSH Late Model Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Tour), Jacob Rutana (Hovis Sportsman Modified Weekly Series) and John Mollick (Hovis Sprint Car Sunbelt Rentals Weekly Series). Austin Allen was the lucky recipient of the $5,000 Landrum Performance "Loyalty Bonus" for eligible Late Model Tour drivers! It was also the MSD Performance "Manufacturers Night" for the Sportsman Modifieds as $17,000 in valuable product was distributed to eligible racers.
It was a perfect night for Super Late Model standout Michael Norris. After winning the ULMS feature, the four-time Lernerville Super Late Model Champion passed RUSH's 2017 Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series Champion, Bryce Davis, on lap 13 and drove a masterful race through lapped traffic to capture the RUSH Late Model portion of the "Steel City Stampede" for the second straight year! Norris joins Max Blair as the only two repeat winners in the 16-year history of the "Steel City Stampede". Norris' second RUSH Tour win of 2024 was worth $3,500 bringing his night's winnings to $8,000. Impressively, it was the milestone 50th career Lernerville win for Norris!
"This feels good," stated the 32-year-old Sarver, Pa. driver. "Once again I have to say thanks to Dan (Bauman, who prepared the track) as that top is just too good even in these cars. Bryce (Davis) fired off really well and I was kind of worried. We tried to tighten up, which actually helped me to run the top. I figured my best chance was momentum. Once we got going, I could see where I could make time on him. I just can't figure out these restarts- they always yell at me, but we're up here and that's all that matters. I'm happy for Nico (Dabecco) and my sister (Mindy) for sure. Thank you to everyone that helps out, Lernerville Speedway and the Tomson Family, and also the Yetter/Schaltenbrand Family in the last race. Congrats to Brock (Pinkerous) on the championship- he'll be up here beating me before too long."
Certainly not to be overshadowed was 14-year-old Brock Pinkerous' performance. Pinkerous trailed four-time Series Champion, Jeremy Wonderling, by just one-point entering the feature. The duo battled the entire feature trading positions back and forth with Pinkerous taking the fourth spot over Wonderling by 0.876 to earn the $20,000 Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series Championship by one-point!
"This feels awesome," expressed the emotional Ellenville, New York driver. "I worked my tail off this whole season to get where I'm at now. This wouldn't be possible without God and everyone that helps me. I'm just at a loss of words right now. Once he (Wonderling) got by me I knew I couldn't get rattled. I just had to hold my own and try to get back by him, but honestly didn't think I would. The car started fading at the end of the race and got really loose. I just had to stay on the bottom and crawl around there, but he ran a great race. He's always battled with me respectfully and hard. Thank you to him for racing me clean tonight and good luck to him for the rest of the season. I can't believe we did this. I have to thank all my sponsors and crew members; hats off to Russ (King)- I love you guys. And also thank you to all my fans."
Following the Dave Poske's Performance Parts "Feel the RUSH" 4-Wide Salute, Norris and Davis led the 25-car starting field to green for the 30-lap feature with Davis taking charge over Norris, Greg Carrico, Kyle Hardy, and Logan Zarin. Pinkerous moved into the top five on lap three, while ninth starting Wonderling was up to sixth one lap later. It was three-wide for the fourth spot on lap 10 with Wonderling getting a two-for-one to take over fourth.
A caution for Damian Bidwell slowed action with 11 laps scored. When racing resumed, Davis continued to lead the field over Norris, while Pinkerous overtook Wonderling for fourth. Norris made the top side work as he slipped around Davis in turn four on lap 13 for the winning pass. Action was hot and heavy with 2021 champion Kyle Hardy, Pinkerous, and Wonderling all battling hard for the third position. The trio swapped the positions numerous times over the second half of the event. Wonderling made it to as high as third on lap 22 for the final time before Pinkerous and Hardy got by in the ensuing laps.
Up front, Norris was perfect in lapped traffic as he took the ND Motorsports/Ingram Engines/Rocket Chassis/Millerstown Pic-A-Part/Integra Shocks/Lojack Cycle-sponsored #N1 to the victory by 1.952 seconds. The victory was Norris' eighth of his career in just 25 Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Tour starts in the last five years. Davis was second for his fifth podium finish in seven Tour starts this season with his worst finish being a sixth.
Hardy drove around Pinkerous for third. Despite struggling in the final laps, nearly slipping off the cushion in turn four on several occasions, Pinkerous was able to keep Wonderling at bay for fourth, which earned him the championship in his second year on the Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Tour. Pinkerous was also the 2024 3C Graphix Futures Cup Champion! Wonderling earned $10,000 for runner-up in points as he's now finished in the top three in points all eight years he's competed on the Tour.
After finishing third in the 2023 "Steel City Stampede", Kyle Zimmerman completed his first year on the Tour with a solid 6th place effort after starting 15th. Zarin was seventh. Jim Rasey went 16th to 8th. Carrico dropped to ninth after running third early on. Jason Knowles had a solid effort in 10th after starting 17th. Allen finished 14th and received a spoiler kit from Ontime Body & Graphic. Damian Bidwell earned a $50 Precise Racing Products gift card for being the hard charger after advancing 10 spots to 15th. Despite his last place finish, Daryl Charlier was able to beat out Bidwell to win the 3C Graphix Rookie-of-the-Year on the Tour.
Making his Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Tour debut, Jacob Whitt led all 10 laps of the D&V Jewelers Non-Qualifier worth $200. The 23-year-old Stephens City, Virginia driver became the 11th different winner in 11 races this year and the amazing 83rd in 101 races all-time! Whitt's #33 ironically beat out the #33 of Sean Boskovich, who was also making his Tour debut. Boskovich started seventh after getting upside down on Friday night in his heat race. Jacob Billyk, Jr. went eighth to third over fellow Pittsburgh PA Motor Speedway racer, Matt Benard, as both drivers completed their rookie RUSH seasons. Jacob Peterson was fifth.
Demetrios Drellos set fast time overall against the 39-car field in FK Rod Ends "Shock the Clock" Qualifying with a lap of 16.975 on Friday night to earn $100. Drellos, Hardy, Zarin, and Norris won the $25 FK Rod Ends heat races. Norris won the Sunoco Dash on Friday night to earn a $100 Sunoco fuel card. Tour drivers Rasey and Austin Hauser also won $100 Sunoco fuel cards in random drawings, while Kolbe Kimbrew, Kurt Stebbins, Knowles, and Boskovich won $50 Sunoco fuel cards.
On Thursday night, Wonderling was the fastest car in practice and received a $100 SRI Performance gift card. Ashton Briggs was the first feature non-qualifier and received a $50 gift card from Holley Performance group. The Landrum Performance Springs BOGO certificate winners were Davis, Bidwell, Hardy, Drellos & John Haggerty. The richest Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series ended with an average car count of 40, which was the highest in history!
Jacob Rutana ended his fourth year of Hovis RUSH Sportsman Modified racing with his first career win! The former go-kart racer started fifth and passed race-long leader Dalton Gabriel on lap 17 then held off a late race charge by seventh starting Darin Gallagher for the $800 victory in the 20-lap feature. Rutana became the season's 8th different winner and 38th all-time as he joined his brother Doug, who is a two-time winner. Rutana also became the 10th different "Steel City Stampede" winner in 11 years! In addition, Rutana won $1,431 in product through the "Manufacturers Night" drawings winning a Holley carburetor and two Sherwood beadlock steel wheels.
"Oh my God- I can't believe this," expressed the 22-year-old Poland, Ohio driver. "This is something else! This was my fourth year of racing and I was beginning to think I was never going to get a win; and to finally do it at one of the biggest shows- you can't beat that. I drew pill #95 and started at the back of my heat was able to start fifth in the feature and got it done- I couldn't be any happier! First and foremost I have to thank my parents- they dedicate a lot of time, money, and effort to get these cars ready to go each week; and secondly, everyone else at the shop that also brings these cars to the races."
Holden and Gabriel led the 25-car starting field to green with Gabriel racing into the top spot over Holden and Logen Lockhart. Fourth starting Lockhart passed Holden for second on lap seven. Lockhart closed in on Gabriel on lap 12 as the laps were ticking off caution-free. Rob Kristyak brought out the first caution with 13 laps completed. When racing resumed, Holden regained second from Lockhart with Rutana following in third. Rutana continued his charge getting by Holden for second on lap 15 and made the winning pass on Gabriel with three laps to go.
Holden slipped high in turn four on lap 18 and made hard contact with the turn four barrels. When racing resumed, Jacob Jordan caught the cushion wrong in turn one and flipped; he was okay. With two laps to go, no driver in the top eight had ever won a RUSH Sportsman Modified feature! That would change as Rutana withstood the last lap challenge from Gallagher to win by 0.317 seconds in the David Rutana-owned, GSI Transportation Services/Quality Truck Body/Kaleel Bro/JTR Lawn & Landscape/Cleveland Bros./Joe Dickey Electric-sponsored #57R.
Gabriel was a career best third after leading the first 16 laps. Dave Murdick raced from 11th to 4th in his first ever RUSH start for the veteran Big-Block Modified racer. Lockhart dropped to fifth, but the 12-year-old held on to win the 3C Graphix Futures Cup Championship! Lockhart did double duty also racing a RUSH Sprint Car.
After mechanical woes on Friday night, Ayden Cipriano charged from 23rd to 6th. Former RUSH Late Model racer, Matt Latta, was seventh in his first ever Modified race. Todd English was another driver that suffered mechanical woes on Friday, but battled from the 25th starting spot to 8th. Karston King was ninth in his first ever Lernerville race. Chelsie Gallagher, who won her heat race on Friday, completed her 11th year of RUSH Mod racing in 10th and remains the only driver to compete every season! Other heat winners were Lockhart and Holden over the 27-car field.
John Mollick put the icing on the cake of his $5,000 Sunbelt Rentals Weekly Series Championship by leading all 20 laps of the Hovis RUSH Sprint Car feature. Mollick was victorious in the "Steel City Stampede" for the second straight year and joined five-time champion, Chad Ruhlman, as the event's only repeat winners. Mollick earned $811 for his 10th win of the season. Engles Motorsports added $11 to each position in memory of former RUSH Sprint Car and RUSH Sportsman Modified driver, Don Blaney, who recently passed away.
Blaze Myers and Mollick led the field to green with Mollick blasting to the point over Myers. Fifth starting Arnie Kent passed both Brent Rhebergen and Myers for second on lap three. Lapped traffic came into play on lap 12 right before the event's first and only caution for Devon Deeter with 12 laps scored. Kent stayed within striking distance of Mollick until losing ground in the final three laps as Mollick pulled away to win by 2.131 seconds. Mollick's 18th career RUSH Sprint Car win came in the Scott Clever-owned, Duda Cable Construction/Pro-X Pressure Washing/ RV Coleman Trucking/Peluso Racing/Dutch Run Coal/Salina Inn/Fox's Pizza Den/JET Engines-sponsored #4J.
Rhebergen was third. Myers dropped to fourth. Trent Marshall went 10th to 5th. Luke Mulichak finished sixth to capture the 3C Graphix Futures Cup Championship over Ricky Tucker III, who finished seventh. Cullen Hutchison, Brandon Shughart, and Charlie Utsinger completed the top 10. Heat race winners were Kent and Myers. The 17-car field was the highest count for the event since 17 in 2020 and second to the highest count of 20 at the 2019 event.
