Ever make mud pies as a kid? How did you turn the dust to mud?....ADD WATER.
I know there will be some dust.....but this past Friday was too damn much, and especially since they watered the wall, and not the track.
Look through the pictures in this thread: http://www.jalopyjou...236178...notice that even though most of the pictures are of daytime races, there is minimal dust.
And check out the 3rd post on this page: http://www.jalopyjou...r...178&page=13 The guy says "From the days when they actually used WATER on tracks.." Hmmm..that's a novel idea.
Notice, those care a running in the daytime, no billowing clouds of dust...and that isn't dust sticking to them
Look up Jerry Clum, and ask him if you could see some footage from the old Limaland. Then you will see the difference compared to LMP of today.

The picture of Tom Bigelow in the Elder Cadillac car taken at Eldora proves my point again.
Sorry skip.... Just trying to bring some truth to this thread, and show the other nay sayers what it used to be like.
People have been fooled into believing that water won't or can't do anything to knock down the dust.
WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do...This man/woman is trying to prove his opinion. You could just not read his posts or just not reply. He reads yours, and whos to say yours are right???
So yea...WHO CARES about what YOU say. Its called respect!
those sprint cars also didnt have wings the winged sprints cars are so planted on the track that it burns up the track it also doesnt help that limaland need new clay

Who,s to say im right iam, I was at eldora in the middle 60,s on a sunday afternoon, and there were some dusty afternoons. S&Pmotorsports no one is not giving him his respect. You for one are not old enought to even know about what im talking about when i went home on a sunday afternoon with just as much dust as there was friday night if not more. There have been some dusty sundays and then there were some that were not. Like i said i dont need to ask Jerry Clum, Im almost as old as jerry, Usac use to run on sunday afternoons at eldora, some days it was tacky and some days it was dry and dusty. Lima ran some sunday afternoon shows yrs ago and it was dusty to. Funny how a feature winner friday night said the track was great. Every one has a right to their opinion, There is no need to prove any thing . Some like a dry dusty track and others dont. I will take a track like it was on allstar night any time that was some great racing. I for one dont have the money to travel very far to other tracks, Why should i when i have attended lima eldora and findlay for yrs, and worked the last 3 yrs at waynesfield. When i have these tracks almost in my back yard why would i want to go any where else. Im not trying to prove any thing i just know i have ate my fair share of dust at other tracks to. Try going to eldora when they had a 500 lap sprint car race or a arca stock car race, then you would see some dust.

Skip, i wasnt talking about you. But masterofall has to come in and put "who cares", well let the person(whatever gender they are, i cant tell by a screen name) at least put his opinion into the conversation. After all, we have our own opinions. I do see a lot of photos of the past, and i bet it was pretty dusty. but with todays generation, everything has to be perfect.
man/women? aint they called something? I havent watched jerry springer in a long time so i forgot what they are called.
Im referring to Need for Speed. I cannot tell by a screen name on what gender they are. oh wait, thats one of those things that i guess we should all post.

on the WHO CARES, i was just agreeing with majority of people on this board
The last two weeks the dust has been bad on the grandstand side. I did see young kids covering their eyes and crying. The dirt was like a fine sand. The winds seems to be stronger than in the past. The wind was blowing right into the faces of the people sitting in the main stands. The tracks can not control the wind direction or the speed of the wind. Remember tracks used to be allowed to put additives into the water they used. That is not allowed now days.
SP Motorsports: Thank You! This board does need to respect each poster. Providing proof of ones opinions/observations should be encouraged....but if it doesn't 'sit' with a few, then you are told "WHO CARES".........
racefan 19: I understand your points, and they are valid. Any track that runs winged Sprint cars knows the wings will churn up the dust, and it can get to be an issue. And they know what to do, to keep the billowing dust at minimum.......
The pictures I posted were to prove that, dirt tracks haven't always been dust tracks....even on Sunday afternoons with the sun beating on the track.
I'll do some looking, and find some daytime pictures of winged cars on a nice and damp track.
Not trying to argue, just providing facts to support my statements.

If I would have gotten blasted in the eyes with dust as a kid, like what happened last Friday night, there is no way I would have ever grown up to be a race fan....particularly of Sprint Cars! One of the reasons would have been because I wouldn't have been able to see the excitement of the racing, while covering my eyes from the onslaught of dust....let alone all of the dust itself.
Yes, Calcium Chloride used be allowed, until the EPA put a stop to it....claiming it was polluting the ground water. However, during the last several winters, the highway departments have been using CACL on the roads to melt ice. The narrow white lines you see in the lanes of travel is the CACL.
The CACL was used to help the clay hold the moisture.
I understand not heavily watering during the week because of an 'iffy' forecast. However, on race day, with mostly sunny skies, and with a stiff breeze blowing directly into the stands, it's time for some water.
Several people jumped on the 'Defend LMP' bandwagon...but nobody explained why they watered before hot laps, and before the heats, but before the feature they watered less than 3' off of the wall, and no water was put on the racetrack in the high groove.
Apparently they thought the dust was coming from, or would be coming from, the cushion???
Who knows. However, that doesn't change the fact they they did not water where the cars would be running...they watered where the cars essentially could not run..... And the end result was the fine sandy like dust, rolling into the grandstands, and rolling past the lights in turn 1 for over 6 minutes after the checkered fell on the last car.

No problem.
With the dust thing, yes it is a dirt track, but come on. when you cant see the race going on, why even go??? This is the reason why i do not go to lima. when you get there, the track is already dried out before the races even start!
I do love a little mud flying, but i want MUD not dust.
Pictures of wings without dust.
Some of the pics show tracks that are not 'heavy', but they are wet enough that dust isn't rolling off of the rear tires, or being churned up by the wing.
Some are from Eldora, some from Fremont, and from the old Limaland
Photos are by Reese Photos, and are from the 1986 season.
The water truck can be seen in the background in this picture of Steve Kinser at Eldora!
These photos were taken on 7-4-97 at San Jose, California
Did every race at Eldora or Lima, (or any other dirt track) have a wet/heavy track, no.
To say that every track was wet/heavy, would be BS.
To say that there is nothing that can be done to keep the dust at least to a minimum, and 'that's just the way it is', is BS too.

Need for speed.....Have you been to Fremont Speedway at all this year???? They water the track BEFORE the races and thats it. They water the sh*t out of it and run it in good and hard pack it. They also have way better clay than Limaland. It don't get near as dusty as Limaland. MY point is that if they keep the water truck off of it once the races start it won't be so bad. Let the dust blow off and get slick and then there cant be any dust!!!! Water makes it worse when you keep applying it 3 to 4 times a night. Whether they water the WALL or the TRACK it doesn't matter....they should keep the water truck parked in the back 40!!
Furthermore, I was there Friday and was in the pits. The pit stands were fabulous to watch some races. Maybe you should check which way the wind is blowing when you buy your ticket? I always do!
P.S.- Nice pics you posted of a bunch of cars clearly running hot laps all over the country throughout the years. Was Lima dusty in hot laps? Lets see some pics @ least where the lights are on and the sun isn't out if you're going to try to prove something!
Where is the dust in these pics?
Dirk: I have not been to Fremont this year. Because of work schedules...Friday nights have been tough to get to any race tracks (I have made it to Gas City 1 time, and because we got the 3rd off, LMP 1 time), and Saturday nights I 'usually' go to Waynesfield (but have missed a few shows because of family commitments)....Sundays I stay home.......so that leaves out Fremont.
I'm glad you could see good from the pit stands. Everybody who was there should have been able to see the races too.
I think I'll pass on letting the wind decide not only where I sit, but how much I will be spending to watch the races. What happens if the wind changes direction......should I run from turn 1 to turn 4, and back...maybe sit in the middle?...or shell out more money and trot to the pit stands before the features....
I looked for quite a while...trying to find night pictures, showing dust, or the lack thereof. I did not find any at all of the sites I went to. I don't know if some years back the flashes were not good enough to take pictures at night (most tracks had some pretty shoddy lighting), or what, but night pictures seem to be tough to find.
I apparently should have went to LMPs site....Mike Campbell has some. With shooting from the infield, the camera is closer to the cars than the fans are that are sitting in the stands. Plus, the photographer is shooting right at the track, and usually isn't pointing the camera 'up' enough to get a large view of the rolling dust. However, here are some pictures Mr. Campbell took that did capture enough rolling dust to be seen.
From last Friday night
That isn't fog in the air...nor did Mike's car spew smoke in all directions.
Chaney passing under the flagstand a few weeks back. Notice that by shooting the picture from a little further away, the rolling dust is easily seen.
From the All-Star show.
Note the lettering on the LR tires compared to the lettering on the LF tires, on both cars. Both are spinning the rear tires badly -down the front stretch-....dry/hard=no traction=dust.
Later that night...more of the same.
I doubt it was a foggy night, so apparently that's dust in the air.
Like I said, I'm glad you could see good from the pit stands. Everybody who was there should have been able to see the races too.
