Has anyone else seen this kid who is 9 years old driving a late model at Marion Center? Chase Carnahan is his name, I guess he has been racing 4 cylinders this year, and now he is getting a late model? Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy?

It isnt even about money, its just that there is no way his body is ready to sustain an accident in a late model, and not to mention jumping from a 4 cylinder to a late model is nonsense for anybody of an adult age.

Back in the mid 1990's there was a run on kids competing to see who could be the youngest pilot to fly coast to coast. Until a seven year old died in a plane crash attempting to break the record. Then lawmakers stepped in and passed a law that stopped the insanity. What kind of media attention do you think serious injuries or death of a nine year old competing against adults would bring?

I agree with but still all about money. That was only practice i am wondering if a track\ insurance company would really let him run in a real race.Practice is one thing but to put him in a race is insane!

If it is true, I agree it is nothing short of insane. Actually allowing him to race in 4 cyl. cars is still insane. Everyone thinks their kid is going to be the next Jeff Gordon (and I wasn't real fond of him racing sprints at 13 either.) Tracks have got to start establishing and enforcing some rules. I have said it before and I will say it again, "If you aren't old enough to drive on the street, you aren't old enough to drive on the track."

Why do I like racing ? Well the colors are bright and there is a lot of movement, so it holds my attention.

Does anybody remember who the young kid was that wrecked and his car caught on fire while practicing a dirt late model, I believe it was in California, and the boys dad sustained burns trying to get him out?

I myself have my own personal opinion. I don't think it's right. I feel you should have to be legal to work before you can race. If your that young, your not done growing and not fully mature yet . you also have not worked and therefor can't respect the dollar, which is not fair to competitors. I realize some kids are more mature than others, but age is the only thing we can gage off of. 16 should be the limit.

Tyler Reddick won at East Bay with the Lucas Oil late models at 15 years old, Austin Hubbard was the rookie of the year runner up at Virginia Motor Speedway in the super lates at 13 and won his first races at 15 at Delaware International Speedway and Potomac and was the super late championship at VMS.

In NASA road racing, you must complete four levels of their High Performance Driving or go to a racing school in order to race. Something like that needs to be implemented. That would allow young drivers to prove that they are capable of racing. I think 13 years old would be a good starting point.

I have 4 boys ages 3 to 13. My oldest won a Gokart championship at age 9 with many wins. And not once has it crossed my mind... Hmmm let's put him in a stock car. I have to much respect in the race teams that bust there asses week after week and spending thier hard working dollar to allow my son to make a mistake and cost them $$$$! I have no problem with them running a class like young guns or a class that is only young drivers. I was put into the wall a few years back by a under age driver that ended my night in a heat race. I was in skeets car. The young boy drove over his head. He did apologize but that does not fix the car. Now imagine you have a new rocket chassis and gets destoyed by a child in middle school! Jmo , I think a age limit needs set. No drivers license , than no racing

There needs to be requirements fulfilled in order to race no matter how old you are. I have seen PLENTY of stupid moves by adults. Age should have no bearing on this.

I'm sorry,i don't care how you look at it,that is just bad parenting...my son is 6 and a big 6 yr old,,,,he is a gear head to the next level and in no way shape or form would i let him crawl in a 4 cylinder ,let a lone a late model....i have no doubt i could put him in a 4 cylinder and he could make it around the track with no problem but when the time comes to react , in the heat of the moment that is when the young mans maturity comes into play...just not right ,,,no matter how you look at it....i hope its not true myself....

9 years old is more like elementary school, like 4th grade maybe? Back in 98 or 99 when the Iceman Series was around (asphalt late model touring series), there was a kid with the last name Kaufman from the state of Indiana running a super late at 11 or 12 in that series in a tour race at Clearfield Mountain Speedway. I think he actually made it to the Busch series for a while in early 2000's.
