This pic is from the Clearfield pits circa early 80's.The guys on the right of the car L to R are Daryl Brandt, Billy Lyle, and Chuck Kennedy. The driver Ed Johns is on the left side of the car.I miss those days. Some of the best racing ever at Clearfield.

Any history of the sprints running Clearfield?
I think sprints were brought in to test out the track and I guess they really got some speed out of them, but I don't know iy they actually raced there and if they did it was only a few races.

Was Ed Johns also known at Squirt Johns? I went to college with a guy from Brockway and he always talked about Squirt Johns.183922_1853259934389_450060_n.jpg 109.76KB 287 downloads

Mt. Zion Speedway(Clearfield) opened as a dirt track in 1970. The History of the American Speedway by Allan Brown shows it ran as a dirt track at least until 1984, the year the book was published. Does anyone know the history? Who built the track? Who were the various owners and promoters over the years and which were the years of pavement and dirt? According to Allan's book, Jennerstown was still a dirt track in 1984. Does anyone know how Clearfield and Jennerstown compared against each other since 1985?183922_1853259934389_450060_n.jpg 109.76KB 287 downloads

Jim Chrissman was a local contractor in Clearfield who built it in 70 or 71 along with Francis Barletta, who owned a couple grocery stores. They had it a few years then it was sold to Ferd Wallace I believe. He ran it as dirt until 85 or 86 when he paved it. In 91 Rusty Peoples, Barry Desalve Sr., and a few others bought it and ran it as asphalt until they sold it in fall of 1999 when it was bought by Dan Russell, a local paving contractor who repaved it before the 2000 season. He ran it as asphalt from 2000-2002. Track sat idle for 03 season, then reopened in 04 as a dirt track running weekly in 04 under Kenny Mcglaughlin and 05 under Andy Paden. Track was a specials only track from 05-10, with Tim Bainey taking over somewhere in these years. Track once again sat idle in 2011, with the dirt coming back off and returning to asphalt for 2012 season. Track currently for sale or lease, with no plans for racing this year. At least thats how I remember it and what i was told about the early years. The only comparison i see between the two tracks in neither is running anymore.Mt. You are correct ,the first few years it had lots of banking then they took some banking out for the lates.First couple years they ran Sprints. They were very fast on the big track. I believe the track was banked a lot more in the early days if memory serves me. Anyone know if they took some banking out?
