Saturday night I paid a visit to Sandusky Speedway. For the first time in a long time, I actually watched, enjoyed and photographed a Stock Car Class. Now why is that ? Well first of all, the cars actually looked like cars ! These guys find stock bodies, why can't the dirt track guys ? Secondly the mentality of "rubbin' is racin'" wasn't there. The drivers seemed to respect each other and their equipment. Granted the class leans heavily to Monte Carlos and the lone Ford Torino is a bit on the rough side. Take a look at these, wouldn't you rather watchrecognizable cars on the track ?

Why do I like racing ? Well the colors are bright and there is a lot of movement, so it holds my attention.

its about laziness. The old monte carlo bodies are almost as easy to bend up as a LM body but nobody wants to take the time. Fabrication is a lost art.

when the rules say you can run a late model style bodies and noses that is what you are going to get' there was a meeting before a.m.p opened and the drivers wanted the late- model look alike cars and noses i voted against it because i know the fans hate them but was out voted.

more than likely the tin on those cars is made by performance bodies and you're looking at over $1000 for a body, i can do my own lm style for far less.

Late model body is the only way to go, fixed both quarters on the car in ten minutes last night, layed them on the garage floor and put the body hammer to them. Good as new. Not doing that with stock body panels.

Id rather have spent the time making the car go faster then taking the time to make the cars look "stock".. I could MAYBE see if we had a class where everything is stock but we don't so why limit the looks to stock appearing?

We were at Sandusky Saturday but left.We just didn't want to wait out the rain. If you want to see "real" stock bodies on pavement cars,go to Midvale. It's also about a 100 times nicer place than Sandusky!

Dirt guys value their time more? If those guys found the bodies, why did only one of them use the stock nose and tail?

Yes, a track full of 1980s Monte Carlos. Nobody under age 30 has driven one or cares to, and everyone over 30 has spent years watching them already. Sprints, modifieds, and late models don't look the same as they did 10, 15, 20 years ago; why do the stocks have to stay the same?

If at first you don't succeed, then maybe you just suck.

Kenny, you KNOW I'm on your side with this. If you want to see how creative one can be, check "Ted Evans" on Facebook. He builds some fantastic replica 55 and 57 Chevrolet Belairs. Sure, a lot of work, but the pride is over the top! Old school forever!

Sprints, Late Models, and Modifieds don't have the word STOCK in their class name. Face it no matter what you call them, Stock, Super Stock, Pro Stock, Street Stock, whatever they are all just limited lates anymore. To me the very name stock carries some weight and the cars should look basically stock.

So, a name change is what you're after. Changing the name of the class would be a lot easier than putting together a car with stock sheet metal. I'm sure the drivers don't care what their division is called.

If at first you don't succeed, then maybe you just suck.

Sadly, the division is dying a slow death anyway. Every single track has their own rules, and seem to care little about conforming rules with other tracks. I still feel however, that bodies should be stock appearing, and fit SOME kind of template.

The divisions that are definitey fading away are the ones that require stock parts because they don't make raceable, rear wheel drive cars anymore! The fact that the "street stocks" are using fabricated bodies and other parts is the only thing that is going to let the division survive. Forcing any racer to buy more expensive template bodies just for looks is a total waste of money that could be spent on keeping the car on the track! The drivers need to take some pride in their self-fabricated bodies, because some of them, especially on the OH/PA line look hideous. But there are some incredible looking fabricated body cars out there and those guys should be proud of their work!

Boy you said a mouthful. 'Stock Car' racing is so far from its roots that we should change the name. These cars haven't been produced for decades. Sometimes I really miss the old days when chevelles, torinos and road runners duked it out on the bull rings and those very type cars filled the parking lots as that's what the fans drove to the track in. We are far away from 'stock cars'
