Since doing Thur night @ L'ville and looking forward to Fri and Sat. also. I just do the specials now. We done the Dream a few weeks ago and will do the World 100 at Eldora also. We also will probably dhttp://billsdirtlatemodels.yuku.com/o a few more specials before this year is out. After watching these big money races and the caliber of drivers and cars that go along with it, it has become less important for me to attend my local race track and their weekly programs. Maybe this is some of the reason fan attendence is down at the local level. I know it has been mine for sure. With so many specials going on, it has given the casual fan the ability to expose himself to these type of shows and save his money for these shows and forget about his local track. Also, how does one set through 6 or 7 classes and a 4 or 5 hour program which is needed for the back gate $$$ in order to survive? I'll probably get blamed for the demise of the local track and weekly racing but as I see it, weekly racing is no longer the place where I want to spend my racing dollar to see sub par racing. This is just "my opinion" and to each his own I guess..

I'm an asphalt guy mostly but do attend dirt races when possible. It must be preference because I'd much rather go to a local weekend race event than a big event IF the car counts are ok. Don't like the crowds and don't like paying extra to get in. I guess for me I could care less abt. What big name is at the track- I wanna see some good close racin. It does seem like dirt has a ton of events be tracks-maybe too many geared toward late models. Problem I see w attraction at local tracks is car counts- the young guns and 305 division at ppms is a joke. Like most tracks those who run them are not doing nearly enough to lower costs for the teams through rule changes and strict tech. To attract fans a 15-20 car count is a must and seeing different winners is a must. Just my opinion.

i thought i was going to see some awesome race after reading it on here. battling back and forth, but what i realized time and time again is, like us racing, this is a drug to many of us. and many of you get an overdose when the big money is paid. what was so good about that? not much......richards following shaver around a bit, till he says, enough.....gone. davey j passing on the bottom......oooooooooh, thats never happened at lernerville. these guys are the ones who are ruining racing in my opinion. everybody has to be like them, well, everybody is disappearing......i'll take local racing anyday to this overpriced fantasy racing. you keep supporting just this crap, and you'll be having bbq's only on the weekend.....jmo...

The heat races were spectacular, the feature was OK. If the locals tried coming out of turn 4 three wide, one of them would end up in the fence. It was awesome watching Garvin and Hubbard lean on eachother, though. Some of our locals can wheel it with the big dogs.

I guess I qualify to make my observations and asumptions. After all l have been following dirt track and some asphalt racing for 48 years. My first dirt track race was at Hatfield Speedway, Hatfield, Pa. with the likes of Eddie Flemke, Buzzie Reutimann, Bill Olson, Frankie Schneder etc. I was HOOKED !! How about Flemington Speedway, Flemington,NJ. The 5/8th mile square "oiled" dirt track. People wore rain coats. You looked like a coal miner if you didn't. I learned the hard way. I had been there only 2 times. Went to Flemington when we attended the "Race of Champions" every fall at Langhorne Speedway near Philadelphia. Langhorne was a 1 mile round asphalt track. No straights. The track was dirt before it was paved and if I am not mistaken Blackie Watt holds the qualifying record when it was dirt. At Lanhorne I met the first Black NASCAR driver. Wendell Scott @ a Grand National race, now known as Sprint Cup. Lanhorne closed and the Race Of Champions was moved to Trenton Speedway, Trenton. NJ. A 11/2 mile asphalt track with a dog leg in the back stretch. It closed quite a few years ago. Then the race was moved to the Small Track at the Poconos That's when I quit going to the Modified Race of Champions. Blackie Watt, Bob Wearing Sr. and Clate Husted [ my favorite LM driver ] would try their luck @ The Race of Chempions every year. Clate started to impress me at Marion Centter Speedway back in the day. I was there for opening day 47 years ago. I was at Jennerstown when Jan Opperman went thru the first turn bill boards in his sprint car trying to make a comeback from another bad crash. This crash made him a vegetable. Jan was the Steve Kinser of his time. Always done the Syracuse, NY modified race in the fall. Not anymore. When we wentl to Syracuse we always did Oswego Super Modified racing at nite. Every one should experience these guys. All this and dirt is still my favorite, My favorite track is Eldora. Ask any SLM guy worth his weight what race he would like to win even though there are races paying more money and they will tell you the World 100. That is the most prestigious Super Late Model race in the country. Of course you have Knoxeville, The Sho-me 100. The North-South and many more now. Been dirt racing from Florida to NY and still love my SLM's. Been to Lernerville, Marion Center, Dog Hollow, Clearfield, McKean County, knox, Jennerstown, Roaring Knob, Sharon,Motordrome [ dirt ] Clinton County, Challenger, PPMS, North Hills, Shumuckers [ Latrobe ], The Rock [Cumberland, MD ] Hagerstown, Port Royal, Selingsgrove, Even remember going to the old Mahaffey Speedway, Mahaffey, PA. and Blanket Hill. I was there when Mel Swartslander got badlly injured in a fiery crash. Saw a sprint car driver get burned in a sprint car at the old Heidleburg Speedway. [Asphalt] Look at PPMS and you will see the old Heidleburg Speedway. When that track closed, they took everything. The stands, Guard Rails. Lights and built PPMS. In 48 years I have been there-done that. There is not enough time in a day to put it all down. So to say I am missing something by not going to weekly races is crazy. I will still choose to watch my traveling pros who can run a 100 lap race with out a caution. Not always but it happens. I have seen it happen. Well almost, Eldora with just one caution. These guys are not skinning their cars every week. What does that tell you? Don't get me wrong there aare some good drivers running locally who just don't have the money or knowledge to race at a higher level. So in the mean time you do your thing and and I will do mine I'm just killing time until it is time to go to Lernerville for their Friday portion of their SPECIAL... What's my point ?? Got me... lol .

My first race was at Clearfield on the half mile dirt track with guys like Clate Husted . Glenn Gault , Steve Peles and R.T . Merriman running late models and a guy named Jeff Chiodo running a hobby stock that was just a beautiful machine , i stood on that hill just shaking from the excitement of those late models coming down the back stretch and the smell of the gas fumes was like a pretty girls perfume ,lol . it is a damn shame that things in racing have gotten so far out of hand with the cost of everything , we are the only sport that is going to eventually put everyone out of business because we let the fat cats with big cash determine what we run in our cars , sooner or later they will run all the small guys off. after over 30 years of going i still can't wait until Saturday night racing or watching i still love it.

Where are tomorrow's national caliber drivers going to come from if not from local tracks throughout the country. Look at the list of guys who have advanced in sprints and late models to be competitive nationally just from this are. We have excellent weekly racing in this area for only faction of the cost of say an outlaw ticket. Casual fans are going to be more inclined to take their whole family for the cost of one ticket for national event.

Couldn't agree more. I live in Clearfield and have a dirt track just a few miles away, but I don't go there. Instead I travel all over to the big late model events. SO much more enjoyable going to PROFESSIONALLY run events!

I'll take the Fab Four shows at Lernerville anytime over the big touring events. I was at Lernerville on Thursday night and will be there Saturday night, since the big boys are so close to home, but I no longer go out of my way to see these sanction events. Without grassroots local racing there would be no touring series.
