Dave Blaney and Gus Linder are both on the final ballot for next year's National Sprint Car Hall of Fame at Knoxville, Iowa. Blaney would seem to be a shoo-in to join his dad in the Hall of Fame at Knoxville, but with drivers such as Mark Kinser and Bobby Davis, Jr. also on the ballot, I doubt Linder will make it on his first time on the ballot. The winners will be announced at the Chili bowl in Tulsa early next year. GOOD RACING TO ALL!!! Walt

My first memory of one Gus Linder was at the old Butler Fairgrounds in the late 1940's. Then Gus and Dave Lundy at Blanket Hill in the 1960's. It always seemed they wanted to win on the very first lap. And who from our area doesn't remember Gus and Mickey at Tri City in the 1960's. That black Ford powered machine was pushed down out of the pits not quite ready to run and went back up into the pits where Mickey would perform his magic. When the car came back out it usually turned into another victory. Hardly ever went to Heidelberg or Greater Pittsburgh Speedway so I really can't comment on those venues. And we can all go to the record books and find 13 wins at the Grove, 10 wins at Lincoln over a four year period, 3 wins at Port Royal and 3 wins at Selinsgrove. And how many times was he in the National field at the Grove. August Joseph Linder I believe is the name of that man from Pittsburgh. And it seems a race to honor this man would currently have to be 83 or 84 laps. We 70 year olds still have dreams, and one would be to hear his name announced at the Chili Bowl. Haven't been to Knoxville since 2006. But an induction ceremony including Gus Linder would do it. And maybe I could get Dave Lundy to ride along.

Another 'Old Fart' checking in, remember Gus at the old Ford City Fairgrounds!! Also at Blanket Hill and Lernerville, and also Tri city....He does belong in the 'Hall of Fame' !!!

Is this the same Dave Blaney that hardly finishes Nascsar races if it is he must have been a lot better than he is at Nascar why would he stop racing sprints if he is a hall of famer

Hildo!! You sure are showing you age and the fact you haven't been around the sport very long!! Dave Blaney is a former World of Outlaws Sprint Car champ and also USAC Silver Crown Champ!! He has probably won more Sprint Car races than you can count!! As for NASCAR, Blaney never set the world on fire, but with about one exception he has never had top of the line equipment in NASCAR. About the only time was his one year with Richard Childress. And that was a terrible year for the Childress and even Kevin Harvick didn't do much!! And besides, what he did in NASCAR has no bearing on his induction to the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxvile!! So please read up on racing history before you come on here running your mouth about something you know nothing about!! Walt

THE Fan and Walt Wimer I said I didn't know you should know as much about being helpful as you do about racing because you already know everything there is to know about racing maybe now would be a good time to learn how to be humble when people have a question it was a question how else do you expect people to learn maybe I could just absorb your racing knowledge by patting you on the back but I can't so until then I ask questions sorry to inconvenience you with not knowing about Dave Blaney you say it as though he's some kind of household name and everyone should know. I didn't know he was so great in sprints that's why I asked why he isn't racing sprints any more that's a logical question especially when you see Dave Blaney in Nascar no wonder he didn't have a good ride he doesn't finish many races are there any other Nascar failures in the sprint hall of fame that I don't know about because I don't think it's very common THE Fan and Walt Wimer

Some of that racing history is hard to find , especially for the older generation. Check out the win lists at Lernerville, Sharon, Mercer, Blanket Hill, Heidelberg, Tri City, Hickory, Jennerstown and then the lists at Lincoln, Selinsgrove, Port and the Grove. And once you find it, it is hard to put into perspective. Cageless? Non wing? Wing? Full time driver or did they have to feed the family come Monday morning? Were they fortunate to have one or some of the best mechanics? And how about the owner? The bender, the mender and the spender as they used to say. And now some don't remember the son. And we remember the father. And in some cases, the grandfather. But if " Fast Freddie " doesn't mean anything to them , you better change the subject.

One of the nicest racers you'll ever meet. 47 Lernerville sprint wins. Sprint car champion in 1968, 1969 and 1971. ARI modified champion in 1960. 7 Sharon sprint wins. Mercer "Western PA Sprint Champion " 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1979. Very early All Star wins. Your Mercer count?

82 Sprint wins from 1968 on. However, I am sure that with his wins before that it is well over 100 at Mercer alone!! And that is just Sprint Car wins!! I don't think much of anyone kept records before 1968 when I first started my column. Overall during the period Quarterson won 152 races here in the western PA area, More than anyone except for Ed Lynch, Jr., who is now up to 232. And there were quite a few Quarterson wins well into Ohio in the 60s when he and Nick Lupe used go out there and blow the doors off the Ohio guys! And in answer to the guy wanting win totals on Gus Linder, localy he only had 32 in western PA in the same time frame. However that does not count his wins at The Grove, Lincoln and elsewhere in the central PA area. And Linder won a lot more before 1968 than he won after. And of course there were many with the old Mickey Banas SuperModified before they went to Sprint Cars!! GOOD RACING!!! Walt

[/quote It's just about sprint car wins. 32 in western Pa.since 1968. 10 at Lincoln since 1968 and 13 at Williams Grove, 3 at Selinsgrove and 3 at Port Royal roughly during the same time. A URC win. 2 cageless USAC races in 1967. Did Mickey talk him into that or did he talk Mickey into that? Well, those two races were good for $ 596. Without those early numbers, we may never know just how good they really were.

Who does the voting for the Hall of Fame Walt? I mean what era of racing are they familiar with? Are there any voters who would just be too young to actually witness or know of the drivers nominated? I always wondered...
