SPORTSMAN'S SPEEDWAY TO GIVE SWEENEY RUSH SPORTSMAN MODS A SUNDAY NIGHT HOME IN 2015; JOINS WITH SHARON FOR A 2-NIGHT WEEKLY CIRCUIT AS BOTH SIGN 3-YR CONTRACTS

By Mike Leone

November 18, 2014                 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Pulaski, PA)…Thanks to a half-dozen speedways, the Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC RUSH Sportsman Modifieds had a schedule of events scattered throughout western Pa. and eastern Ohio for the inaugural 2014 season.  In October, Sharon Speedway made a huge announcement that the Sweeney RUSH Sportsman Modifieds will have a weekly Saturday night home at the Hartford, Ohio oval in 2015.  And now today, RUSH Directors Vicki Emig and Mike Leone are thrilled to announce that Sportsman's Speedway in Knox, Pa. has come aboard to run the RUSH Sportsman Mods on a weekly basis on Sunday nights!  Both Speedways have signed three-year contracts to have the cars part of their weekly program beginning in 2015 through at least 2017!

The Sweeney RUSH Sportsman Modifieds feature Northeast-style center steer Modified cars utilizing GM 602 crate engines ($3,250) with the popular spec "sealed" Bilstein Shocks ($135) on steel wheels and spec Hoosier Tires.

"We have to thank Jim and Louise Colwell for believing in our program and signing a three-year contract to insure the racers that the division isn't going anywhere," stated Emig.  "This is not only a boost to our Series and racers, but to the Modified division as a whole in western Pa. and eastern Ohio.  It's no secret that Modified racing in our region has dwindled in recent years, but the creation of the RUSH Sportsman Mod division in 2014 rekindled an interest in this type of racing and saw a good handful of both new and former Modified racers participate in the inaugural season of the class.  The commitment of  Sharon and Sportsman's coming on board as weekly speedways is the key piece that we were waiting for and is sure to spur the growth even more and secure a strong foundation for this affordable Modified option for years to come!"

Sportsman's events will be part of the $10,000+ Weekly Series point fund for member racers as well as the "Futures Cup" program that will debut in 2015 for eligible teenage racers.  RUSH is also planning a small Touring Series, much like the popular Sweeney RUSH Late Models, at speedways throughout the region.  Sportsman’s will also be the site of the 2015 “Manufacturers Night”.  This event has been popular with the Late Model division and has grown to over $30,000 in prizes, while a similar night debuted for the Modifieds in 2014 and offered over $5,000 in prizes with random drawings to the racers.  This event, like the Late Model one, is expected to grown each year.

Drivers do not have to join RUSH to compete; however, RUSH member racers will be eligible for point funds, the $100,000 excess participant accident insurance (over and above one's health insurance and track's insurance limits), discounted pit passes at all Lernerville Speedway events, as well as other perks.

Sportsman’s Speedway opened in 1973 and over the years featured most all of the regional divisions including the “410” Sprint Cars, Super Late Models, and Big-Block Modifieds. Sportsman’s has long established itself as a Sunday night entertainment venue and has been a favorite for families to enjoy its relaxing environment with its noted grassy hillside and unobstructed viewing.  Racers have always enjoyed the smooth and racey surface with no fencing or walls in turns one and two or the backstretch.

Sportsman's, like other facilities throughout the region has seen its Modified divisions tail off.  The Big-Block Modified, Six-Cylinder, and the former Sportsman Modified division were all dropped years ago before being replaced by the "358" small-block division; however, unfortunately that division too has experienced dwindling car counts of less than 10 on most nights throughout the past few seasons.

"The Modified division has been very sentimental for me," expressed Jim Colwell.  "The Modifieds have had a long history at the speedway and have been popular with the both the fans as well as my family.  My brother Sam, who built and operated the speedway until his passing, was a Modified Coupe racer himself so the division holds a soft spot for me.  However, I've come to realize that it's time to become proactive and bring the RUSH Sportsman Modifieds to Sportsman's weekly in 2015 and into the foreseeable future.  It'll be great to team up with Sharon so the racers have two tracks to run at weekly and hopefully offer a stable class for many years to come."

In 2015, Sportsman's will feature the “305” Sprint Cars, RUSH Sportsman Modifieds, a Stock Car division, and front-wheel-drive four-cylinder Mini Stocks at “the fast third-mile”.  Sportsman's will also alternate a fifth division including Vintage Modifieds, Micro Sprints, Mod Lites, Econo Mods, and other classes to be determined.  Sportsman's typically has an open practice the first Sunday of May with racing beginning the following Sunday at 5 p.m.

Sportsman’s “358” Modified drivers will be eligible to compete in 2015 in the Sweeney RUSH Sportsman Modifieds provided they are not competing full-time (10 or more races) with the Big-Block Modifieds or “358” Modifieds elsewhere.

Sportsman’s is located at 54 Colwell Drive, Knox, PA 16232 (Huckleberry Ridge/Curllsville Road just off of Route 208 in Elk City between Knox and Shippenville, Pa.)  For more information, check out their website at www.sportsmansspeedwayknox.com or call 814-797-1621.

If they can do half as good of a job with the mods at Sharon as they did with the crates at Sharon it should be a resounding success !!!

What it doesn't tell you is that the knox 358s that are "allowed" to run with the Knox Rush Mods have to be Rush legal!  This means that they have to switch to steel wheels, spec shock, spec tire and the 602.  I talked to 3 guys that ran full seasons there last year that will not be spending the money to switch over.  So out of the weekly field of 7 to 10 at the most,  you already lost 3 for sure.  Then there is the rule of not being able to race full time at another 358 track.  So that rules out, Fink, all the Holdens, Priest.  So ok now that leaves Weatherby unless he runs full time at Mercer, Moyer and 3 vintage mods that showed up to race with the 358s.  I think this took a small field and made it even smaller.  Sure a few Rush mods will come but unless they start getting more, it will be another boring race like they had at the Stampede.

Years ago when Sportsmans ran the big blocks and sprints I was there almost every week, and really enjoyed the place, and it was packed. Now with only support divisions I can't figure out what the fuss is about. I'm just not a fan of all the support divisions around, especially when they are billed as a top division. Until they get a sanctioned sprint show they will not get my dollar and from the photos I've seen many other dollars, the place used to be packed now empty and will stay that way till they run a major show. That said, one needs to get used to more and more support class only tracks!!  If McKean County doesn't bring the "super" Lates back next year by my count there will be at least five support class tracks in the area!!  Raceway 7, Sportsmans, Hummingbird, Thunder Mt. and McKean County.  The high cost of racing is slowly catching up with the tracks and the race teams!!   We  may see the day when the only races for 410 Sprint Cars, "super" Late Models and big block Modifieds will be specials.  There won't be enough race teams that can afford the high priced cars and the tracks won't be able to afford purses for such on a weekly basis.  I hope that doesn't happen, but I am concerned about it and every driver, race team and fan should be as well!!

GOOD RACING TO ALL!!!

Walt

Who can afford to spend 40, 000 $ on a motor that you could blow up in 10 laps...not me....support classes are the next premier class....its the only way...I know guys that would refinance there house to build motors...not this guy...now banks are not giving money away like they use to...so the average 40 hour a week working man can not afford these high priced motors....I know I cant

I understand your point Walt, but one doesn't need to get used to support divisions. I made the choice to attend a few less races and travel 3-6 hours to see quality sprint car races. Most of the time I see 10+ people I recognize from western Pa. and wonder how many more are there I don't know. Next race probably Lincoln then Attica spring nationals.

Starboyshady. I Did contact them and seems what I was told by 3 other people that contacted them is correct. Cars must be 100% rush legal. Meaning 602, steel wheels, spec tire and shock. Unless you know something different ease let us know. Not sure where I was being. Jack%#|. Please let us know because we all would like to run but we where told no!

I agree again.

At the end of the day, I don't care what other fans do. Yes, I'll share my opinion, based on what I've seen over the years, but really anymore, I refuse to support shows and tracks that are strictly back gate. Just my preference.

OMG!  You have to follow the rules that are made?!  Who would have thought such a thing!  The class is 602 Crate Modifieds, why should the rules be altered to make you few happy?  Wanna run? Make your car legal by those rules!  This isn't a 602/358 class!

No sh*% Nick D. But they are advertising it as knox 358s are eligible to run with the rush mods. And those of us that have run there where lead to believe we would be eligible. Then after the contract is signed we re told oh by the way. The only way your eligible is to buy all the stuff and change your car. So if you don't know the background to it you should probably stay out of it

If the people than run Knox aren't smart enough to get all the details and rules before bringing the class on then that's who you should be mad at.

I think you guys are misunderstanding how it is advertised. Since they announced this series there has been an eligibility rule that says any driver that has competed in a headline division (including 358s) and has finished in the top 5 in points or has won in the past 2 years is not eligibility to run RUSH sanctioned races. But since Sportsman's dropped the 358s they're allowing those drivers to make the decision to run Mercer or make their car RUSH legal and run Sportsmans.

Its not Rocket Science. If you want to run RUSH Modifieds and you have run at Sportsmans for the last 20 years in 358's, even if you have won the points championship every year, you can convert your car and run in the Series. This is actually a better concession than they are giving anywhere else. Those that don't want to covert their cars have the option of travelling 60 miles and running Mercer. Bottom line, you can still race either way.

After numerous conversations with those involved, it was stated that the release could have been worded better.  The statement of Sportsmans 358s being allowed to run with the RUSH mods was actually meant to say that just like Dingo said  even if you was champion last year or top 10 in points they are going to let you run.  This is a bend of the RUSH rules and I applaud them for this.  In speaking with the drivers that race there they took it as they would be allowed to run (with penalties such as weight......) for a year and phase out as season or at end of season.  That being said we will not be there this season as we race fulltime at a different 358 track.  And in talking to the guys I raced with at knox of the 7 I talked to not one is going to stay there.  That sucks for the fans as RUSH gets even less than we did for a field of cars.  So starboyshady and NickD go ahead and put your two cents in but it doesn't really matter what you say  you don't have anything involved in it.  Its us that supported the track that are getting screwed.
