RUSH'S POST-RACE COMPLETE GM 604 ENGINE TEARDOWN CONFIRMS LEGALITY OF CURRENT RUSH PRO STOCK AND CURRENT LERNERVILLE SPEEDWAY POINT LEADER COREY MCPHERSON

 

July 20, 2015              FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 

(Pulaski, PA)…On Friday night , July 17, the GM 604 crate engine of both the Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC RUSH Pro Stock & Lernerville Speedway Sportsman current point leader, Corey McPherson, was inspected during a complete tear-down at the completion of the Lernerville's Sportsman feature event by RUSH Competition Director Travis Harry.  The teardown was conducted under the lights in the pit area for all to observe.  The conclusive results were that McPherson's  engine rebuilt by Ingram Engines of Kittanning, Pa. met the specs per the GM Tech Manual.   

 

McPherson, 27 of Leechburg, Pa., is the defending two-time Lernerville Sportsman champion.  McPherson is a four-time feature winner with his GM 604  in 2015 at Lernerville and owns 22 career victories at the Sarver, Pa. oval.  McPherson currently leads the $1,000 to-win RUSH Pro Stock $5,000 Sweeney Weekly Series points that will conclude September 30 in addition to Lernerville's Sportsman Championship points.

 

"It's our job to make sure everyone competing within our Series are abiding by the standards set forth in not only the RUSH rules, but most importantly the GM Tech Manual, which clearly defines the permitted parameters of a rebuilt engine, of which McPherson's was,”  explained RUSH Co-Director Vicki Emig.  "We, along with sister series, NeSmith, take the authorizing of engine rebuilders very seriously and are continually policing their work to ensure a level playing field for our competitors to preserve the integrity of our series and speedways throughout the Northeast that are weekly-sanctioned or host RUSH-sanctioned events." 

 

“With the recent introduction of the RUSH Pro Stock Series and Lenerville's GM crate engine participants eligible for the  program, along with Corey McPherson's continued success with his GM 604 engine package, both Lernerville General Manager Gary Risch and myself felt that is was in the best interest of both organizations to take this step to continue to preserve the integrity and concept of both crate racing programs,” continued Emig.  “Even though drivers have the ability to file a protest, every so often there comes a time where it's in the best interest of the Series, speedways, and racers for a complete teardown of an engine to occur.  Corey McPherson and his family were very cooperative from the moment he was informed that his engine would be completely torn at the speedway and through the entire teardown process.  The findings will now allow Corey and his team the ability to get back to focusing on racing."

 

“This entire process is one of the many benefits speedways and its racers receive under RUSH sanctioning,” said RUSH Co-Director Mike Leone.  “We’re not just about paying large point funds and promoting our racers, but just as important are only a phone call away to help assist speedway with technical questions, tech support, and the engine teardown/protest process.  We realize speedway tech officials can only do so much on race night with several other divisions to worry about.  We encourage them to contact us if they are concerned about an issue, and in this case we were happy to assist Lernerville in this process.”

I'm going to play devil's advocate and call this a PR stunt.  I know, I know, no tech and people bitch; tech and people bitch.

Did they put it back together and seal it back up or did they just send him home with a motor that will cost him 3 grand to get Re sealed ???

They just told everyone that come next year you will have a crate motor. Look Cory wins, and it's legal to.

Ppms just pulled 51 cars allowing open motors to compete against crates with crates running right there with the open stuff. The only reason to mandate crates is to line the pockets of ole grimy gash herself. It's pathetic that tracks just bend over for anyone who throws out a couple bucks instead of asking racers what they want

The only reason to mandate crates is to line the pockets of ole grimy gash herself. It's pathetic that tracks just bend over for anyone who throws out a couple bucks instead of asking racers what they want

No, it's to save the racers money. Doesn't it make perfect economic sense to to have to buy equipment to replace the perfectly good equipment you already own?

More spot engine checks, and some tire samples are going to be pulled at other weekly tracks.

 

 

 

Rules without vigilance would be irresponsible, espically considering the constraints of the series.

This ,to me, is proof that "open motors" and the crate motors can coexist and be competitive with each other.

NeSmith is doing it with a Street Stock series.... 602's and limited "do it yourself" motor options

Going straight 604 or 602 crate motors is just a backroom kick back....IMO

that 604  would be highly competitive with the old economy motor that they ran in the limited lates at PPMS. 

 

i hate crate only divisions, it took the mechanic out of it. i would have never raced if stocks were crate only because the people that owned my cars got their kicks  building the motors.

Actually, a little birdie tapped me on the shoulder and said Lernerville bought McPherson a new engine and said you'll have it on Wednesday. I'm not sure if I'm the only one to have heard that or not. I completely agree on it being a PR stunt. It makes those crate engines look better. 1 point for the bad guys.

and the question on most peoples minds..was the team notified before friday that they would be tore down at the completion of the event? or was this a total surprise inspection after the race.

Was the engine legal, if from Ingram, no doubt.

The question is why don't they do this in the weekly/touring crate late series more often?

I agree with 4FUN, it is just further proof that the current "open" engine package and a legal 604 are very competitive with one another. Why change anything in a division that averages 20 cars weekly?

 

The last track that tried the crate only concept in the area had <5 cars each week.  The 84, 965, & 65 were the only cars most nights.

I don't go to Lernerville often but with the car counts that they have and the competiveness of the division I would say if it ain't broke don't fix it. Do I like the concept of the crates and low cost? Yes. But the track is a business and from what it sounds like you are about to kill off a division. Unless they are getting one hell of a kick back I don't see the logic behind it. If teams see that the 604 is a viable engine option let them decide that for themselves.

 

Hypothetically, if they really want a crate division add the late models or modifieds. There is a good bit of late model teams that I bet would come since there are not too many tracks running a crate class on Friday night in the general area. 

 

I don't know Corey but kudos to him for being different and proving that you don't need all motor to win.
