Reading on Facebook that a certain driver is only good because he has a huge amount of backing dollars...I say he still has to go out and drive the car and make it work...what does everyone think about "super funded" drivers?

the money will only help get started. after that it's up to the driver. look at all of the sons of famous drivers. i doubt any of them used much of their own money to get started .once they drop the green flag money is useless. if you can drive you will stay

Having tons of money won't automatically make somebody a better driver.... but it will make learning to be a better driver a whole lot easier.

I have seen many teams come into the sport and spend with wreckless abandon with little to show for it after they were through. With a few exceptions, most of the teams I see wininning today had fairly humble beginnings. The one thing that having a big bank roll allows a raw driver to do is not to have to wait to get back to the track after a tough lesson.

Money spent right can make a better driver.   There is no guarantee.    Money can buy driver training, strength training, and reflex training.   Most NASCAR drivers spend the bulk of a week in the gym.   Why?  1. it makes them a better driver, and 2. Because money allows them to sit in a gym all week.    Money buys experience.  If a 100k/yr crew chief wasn't worth the expense, they would not be needed.   A driver is like the fireman on a steam locomotive.  Fire goes down, driver shovels more coal to bring it up.   The crew chief is looking down the tracks and sees what needs done down the line. Big picture vs Little picture.   In turn, the paid for experience of top help, makes a smarter driver.

Equipment vs Money.   If I am told "drive the balls off the car" and I don't have to worry about anything, Im going to push the car to the limit every time, Im going to see where that breaking point is, and im going to see how long those tires will last because my job is to "drive the damn car."   If my job is to put food on the table, and a roof over my families head-with an occasional side of fun racing, I may never leave my comfort zone pushing it as hard as I can, because id rather bring it home in one piece than to risk running another second faster and parking the car the rest of the year. Hands down, on a broad scale the drivers who put on the best show for the fans and are running like wild on the track, are usually not the ones who have paid for the equipment.

Competition.  You are only as good as your best competitor.   Once a driver steps out of their comfort zone, they show their true skill and talent.  They also learn how to be a better driver because they are competing against different or better drivers.   It takes $$ to travel, and for your crew to travel.  Not everyone has the luxury of 100-150 mile tows to race each week.

I do believe money can make a driver, but only if the driver wants to make themselves a better driver.

I think money and equipment can give a driver a false sense of talent. You will see the talent show when the drivers start through lap traffic and have to move around the track. Not in all cases though.

NO, your stalker/backmarker nemesis is the personification of this.

A race teams potential is only as good as the driver and crew behind it.

Money can't buy a driver driving talent in a day,  it can buy you an experienced person to adjust your car and driver, or send your team for some schooling  which may help, if your team doesn't have those ability's already.

Money definitely doesen't hurt!

But I have seen plenty of talented low dollar teams make some money guys look like chumps.

I hate to rag on any driver, because they deserve our respect mostly for going out there week after week to put on a show for us fans. But Todd Bachman is a name that comes to mind here. He's put a lot of money into racing. Cars, equipment, driving lessons, etc. He still has yet to win a feature if I'm not mistaken. Money can't buy you everything. Chris Schneider can go out and race practically any stock at Lernerville and be competitive with it, if not win. I agree with Skull, money allows for quicker recovery. But money isn't everything.

Money can make you a winner, even a regular winner.  But it doesn't make you a better driver!!

well express man you are right for a change,  just ask any winning driver if he wants to drive a back marker car and see what happens ,good thing these keyboard drivers don't race. equipment is everything.

you are oh so right and the racing quality changes from track to track. anyone who thinks it is driving they are right it is 20% driver and 80% equipment, I remember beating one of our local now traveling stars quite a bit until the money and crew chief prevailed.

I tend to agree with that. Having to try to beat Miley, Ferree, King and apparently Lux now too every week is a really tall order.
