I have always said that this division is under valued. In my opinion, modifieds are the most consistent "best race" every night, of the top 3 divisions, no matter where you are at. (If that makes any sense) For example, Ive gone to the World Finals the past years. I believed the modifieds were the best race each night. And i promise i am not acting biased. Just giving my honest opinion. But when you look at the "superbowl' race for each division, the late models have a $100000 to win, about 3 $50000 to wins, and multiple $20000-$40000 to wins. Sprints have a $150000 to win at Knoxville, then i think 2 $50000 to wins at williams grove and eldora, and then multiple $10000-$20000. The modifieds however, only get $45000 to win Super Dirt Week, then have a $20000 to win in the Eastern States at Orange County. But then what???? Is the Freedom 76 a $20000 to win? But then i cant think of anything else significant for the modifieds. It definitely turns drivers away from joining that division when they know there isnt many large paying races. Even most of the famous big block guys have moved into some form of 360 sprint racing or super late models.
JMO of the whole situation.

Jordan Eck is right. Another track or two picking up the division would help it to recover, but I don't see that happening. Too many local tracks are afraid of having to pay one featured division let alone two. Rusty Nuts is also correct. The BB's consistently had the best racing I saw at Lernerville this year.

Bill I find this very interesting and agree the Mods are a favorite class in this local area and there is the secret at least in my mind ( Modifieds) not E Mods real western Pa Mods in the last 25 years I have watched them me changed so many ways, Mercer had the best Mod class for years they ran the now Big blocks with the now 358 Mods and even the small home grown motors that today would equate with a true crate motor and they all had a great time and the car count was pretty good on any given night.
Enter the era of mega classes and now the 358s would run all by themselves and the Big blocks would no longer be welcome and true the 358s have done well but the Big Blocks have suffered in this area at least in my eyes but there is a great solution we introduce yet another class and they must have their own races results reduced numbers, I realize I am probably going to be chastised for this post but it is only my opinion.
I now ask this question why cant we run them together the same way we do the BRP mods it would generate more cars for a track and for years they all worked well as MODS and still does for the BRP then will come the the slow guys get in the way havent they always done that regardless of their engine size and experience.
I conclude with this bring back simple Mod racing.
Thanks Bill

I don't get here much but found this topic very interesting. I'm from Central New York and have more tracks than I can count running Modifieds within a couple of hours of my house. On average our tracks draw between 15-20 cars weekly in the Modified division, some more, some less. I think there are several reasons why Modifieds are doing well, but not great in New York.
1. Most tracks run similar rules - BB/SB can run together almost anywhere in New York with rules designed to make them even. The only HUGE difference is usually tires (American Racer/Hoosier)
2.A Purses - I'm not saying New York purses are spectacular by any means but Modifieds are the headline class and get paid as such. Most places pay between $1200 to $2200 on a weekly basis to win.
2.B More High Dollar Shows - We have three series that pay decent money. The Super DIRTcar Series pays $6,000 to win minimum, the RoC pays $4,000 and the Short Track Super Series pays minimum $5,000 to win $500 to start. I think this year I read one race in your area paid $5,000 to win and that was at Tri-City? We have them on a regular basis including several midweek events. Heck, Utica-Rome had two $10,000 to win races and two $5,000 to win events this season.
3. Feeder System - Like Crates or Hate them our Sportsman class is top notch because of the 602 Crate Engine program. They had a race that paid $2,000 to win at Albany-Saratoga last week and got 60 plus cars. That division is growing. A few guys may drop down and a few guys may use that as a stepping stone into going BB Modified racing.
Some of the things I noticed in my brief trip out to Western Pa that keep car counts down:
1. Its Either Big Block/Small Block - There really isn't much crossing over, if you are a BB track that is that or a SB (I think this was just mentioned)
2. Tire Rules - Lernerville and Sharon run Hoosiers and I noticed Mercer runs American Racers...that can't help.
3. Purses - You guys are lucky to go to Lernerville or Mercer and see two headline divisions. The problem is where does the money come to pay those two divisions like they deserve? Even the Sprint Car guys don't even get close to what Central Pa guys get at $3,000 to win, $300 to start.
Just a couple thoughts.
