Bacon Rules Eldora but Beaber is BOSS Champ

14 October 2013 - 11:14 PM

Bacon Rules Eldora but Beaber is BOSS The second full season of the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series for traditional wingless sprint cars wrapped up in dramatic fashion Saturday night. An incredible 54 car field signed in to attack the fables high banks of the most legendary dirt track in the nation, the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver Brady Bacon would score his first ever BOSS victory, but the event saw the race for the season championship come right down to the final laps of the main event, where Tony Beaber was able to keep his closest challengers in sight to secure the 2013 title. The evening began with a bang, literally for Beaber who came into the night with an 18 point lead over Brandon Spithaler. In hot laps, Beaber had something break on the #3T Beaberbuilt chassis sending him on a wild series of flips through turn 2. With the chassis destroyed, he would opt to jump into his father's car, and start at the rear of his heat race in the #3J car. Entering the program, five drivers still had a legitimate shot at the 2013 BOSS championship. In heat race action, 3 of the 5 drivers managed to transfer to the night's main event including second in points, Brandon Spithaler, third place Mike Miller, and fifth place Kirk Jeffries. Beaber and 4th place driver Aaron Middaugh were relegated to the B-Main events. The five BOSS heats were won by Drew Abel, Dallas Hewitt, Jarrett Andretti, Matt Westfall and Brady Bacon. The twin B-Mains proved very tough and the second B-Main would play a pivotal role in deciding the championship. In what may have been the Cinderella story of the night, 2012 BOSS champion Dustin Smith of Russiaville, Indiana charged from 5th to win B-Main #1 in the Burkin owned #48x car powered by a steel 305 cubic inch engine. Adam Miller of McDonald, Pennsylvania was making his first start at Eldora and he managed to score the second and final transfer spot. B-Main #2 found points leader Beaber starting from the #6 spot with only the top 2 finishers transferring to the main event. California driver Thomas Meseraull jumped out to the early lead leaving BOSS points contenders Aaron Middaugh and Beaber fighting to keep their 2013 title hopes alive. Still nursing some soreness from his hot laps crash, Beaber was able to race through the pain and get up on the wheel to charge into the runner-up spot to secure his spot in the main event behind B winner #2 Meseraull. Middaugh faded late to 4th, thus ending his title hopes as BOSS young gun Michael Fischesser, in his Eldora debut, charged from 12th starting spot to finish 3rd. Although one spot short of the transfer, he may have been the fastest car on the track in that event. With the 24 car starting field now set for the 25 lap finale, four drivers remained eligible to win the title. Beaber held a slim 15 point lead over Spithaler with Mike Miller only 31 points from the championship lead. Kirk Jeffries would start in front of all 3, but needed a lot of luck in his favor to pull off the championship. Multi-time BOSS feature winners Justin Grant and Luke Hall would lead the field to the starters green flag. Hall, the defending winner of the BOSS/Eldora finale last season, shot to a quick early lead with Westfall in tow. But Brady Bacon made it quickly evident that he was the man to beat as he moved from 8th to 4th in less than a lap. Through the early and middle stages of the race, Hall, Westfall and Bacon put on a non wing sprint car driving clinic with slide jobs and crossovers the order of the night. The trio were three wide for the lead on lap #8 and again at the line to complete lap #11 was nearly another 3 car dead heat. On lap #13, Bacon was able to take a clear lead with Westfall still giving chase. Back in the pack, the fans had their eyes on 12th starting Chris Windom who was up to 4th by halfway. Also on the move were Gary Taylor in the Hery #40 who had started 14th and Thomas Meseraull in the Stensland #41 who started from 22nd. Also, the race within the race found Kirk Jeffries running highest among the championship contenders, but unable to put enough distance between himself and the other 3 points chasers. Beaber, Miller, and Spithaler ran very close together the entire 25 laps, which played to Beaber's advantage. Late in the race, Beaber was able to get past Spithaler and kept Mike Miller within sight, allowing Beaber's 17th place finish to secure himself as the 2013 Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series tour champion. Meanwhile, back up front, Bacon had opened up a comfortable lead, but Windom in the Walker #11 was still the man on the move. Bacon encountered heavy lapped traffic as Windom worked past Westfall to the runner-up spot. Over the final 2 circuits, Windom was able to shave a half second off the lead gap, but Bacon was not to be denied on this night as he cruised home 1.726 seconds ahead of Windom in a race that went green to checker with no cautions and 23 of the 24 starters finishing the race. Westfall held on for 3rd place with Dallas Hewitt up from 10th to finish 4th in a substitute role for Chad Wilson who was injured the night before. Gary Taylor rounded out the top five with a 14th to 5th place run. The rest of the top 10 were Justin Grant, Luke Hall, Jarrett Andretti, Brandon Whited and Kody Swanson. The final BOSS points standings were as follows: 1st- Tony Beaber - 2332, 2nd- Brandon Spithaler - 2314, 3rd- Mike Miller - 2309, 4th- Kirk Jeffries - 2266, 5th- Aaron Middaugh - 2262, 6th- Chad Wilson - 2182, 7th- Michael Fischesser - 2115, 8th- Adam Miller - 1991, 9th- Johnny Beaber - 1978, 10th- Chuck Wilson - 1876 The Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series thanks all the drivers, teams, tracks, and fans who supported the series and we look forward to bigger and better things in 2014. BOSS Set to Finish 2013 at Eldora Sprintacular

10 October 2013 - 12:35 AM

BOSS Set To Finish The Season With Eldora Sprintacular This Saturday In just a little over 2 years, the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series has earned a reputation for providing fans with large fields of competitive race cars. With the 2013 season nearing completion, this reputation will be on full display at what may be the nation's most prestigious dirt race track this Saturday night October 12th. The world famous Eldora Speedway will play host to the "Sprintacular" event featuring not only BOSS, but also the All Star Circuit of Champions and the NRA Sprint Invaders. No less than 5 drivers will come into this final points event with a legitimate shot and earning the season championship for the fast growing regional BOSS sprint series. In 11 events completed so far, 10 different drivers have scored feature wins. In 2012, the series saw 11 different winners in 12 events. With these statistics, it is quickly apparent that fans can expect dozens of drivers capable of pulling off a victory in the series. Series and track officials are expecting a strong field of race cars that will be led into battle by series points leader Tony Beaber of Gibsonburg, Ohio. Beaber has one win on the season at Pittsburgh PA Motor Speedway in June and just took over the points lead in the last event when current second place driver Brandon Spithaler of Evans City, PA got upside down in the main event. Spithaler also has one victory on the season at Mercer Raceway Park in May. Only 18 points separates the pair with Wapakoneta, Ohio driver Mike Miller sitting only 34 points out of the lead based on some very consistent runs. Sitting in fourth place is Polk, Ohio racer Aaron Middaugh who has come on strong late in the season. Middaugh earned his first career feature win at Sharon Speedway in August and now trails the leader by only 51 markers. In the 5th spot sits Westerville, Ohio driver Kirk Jeffries who may have the most momentum fresh off his first BOSS win at Pittsburgh PA Motor Speedway just 2 weeks ago. Jeffries now sits only 80 points from the lead, but within striking distance if the lead drivers encounter trouble in the anticipated tough Eldora field. Also leading the drivers into battle will be the rest of the top 10 in current BOSS points including 6th place runner Chad Wilson of Toledo, Ohio who has made giant strides and is getting ever closer to his first tour victory. In the BOSS event at Eldora in 2012, Wilson started from the front row of the main event, and there is little doubt that Wilson hopes for similar success this year with an even better finish. In the 7th spot sits Cincinnati, Ohio hotshoe Michael Fischesser who just scored his first ever traditional sprint car feature win in August at Eriez Speedway. Fischesser will be making his Eldora debut on Saturday. The driver holding down the 8th spot is no stranger to Eldora Speedway, but it has been quite a while since he last tackled the foreboding high banks. Fans will be delighted to see the legendary Johnny Beaber hustle a traditional sprinter around the Rossburg oval once again. The 9th place driver will also be making his Eldora debut. McDonald, PA racer Adam Miller made the commitment in 2013 to go full time wingless racing with BOSS while also running various Indiana speedways, far from his Pennsylvania shop. As the season winds down, the persistence is starting to pay off as Miller has had several great late season runs despite being down to his backup motor. Rounding out the top 10 is another veteran racer, Chuck Wilson of Perrysburg, Ohio who has many laps both with and without the wing at Eldora. Last season's BOSS event at Eldora saw 34 cars on hand despite near freezing temperatures in late October. Ludlow Falls, Ohio driver Luke Hall won the event in a torrid battle with Dallas Hewitt and Sheldon Haudenschild. Hall has indicated that he will return to defend his win. Also planning to attend is 2012 BOSS champion Dustin Smith of Russiaville, Indiana who was forced from the 2013 campaign after splitting with his championship team. Last year, Smith raced through the B-Main and started deep in the field passing 15 cars to secure the championship in dramatic fashion. The Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series is an open tire series, but bonus awards are offered by both Hoosier Racing Tire Midwest and Lias Tire American Racer for the highest feature finisher with all 4 of the manufacturers respective tires on their car. Known for its bonus awards, the series is also proud to have the sponsorship support of Buckeye Machine and Fabrication of Forest, Ohio who sponsors the $50 cash "Hard Luck Award" of the night, Horne Performance of Dayton, Ohio who sponsors the $50 "Hard Charger Award" for the driver advancing the most positions in the main event. The "Steel Block Award" is another $50 that goes to the highest feature finisher using a steel block engine and sponsored by Ernie's Radiator Repair of Ashland, Ohio. Heat races also pay out with the series and BOSS is excited to be partnered with sponsors such as Underground Professionals Inc of Ashland, Ohio, Indy Race Parts of Indianapolis, Kistler Engines of Fremont, Ohio, Southeast Harley Davidson of Cleveland, Ohio, and S & H Nerfs of Piqua, Ohio who help make heat race pay possible for the tour drivers. For this event at Eldora, the series has been able to obtain additional sponsors to cover the twin B-Main events to add money to their purse. Jerry McClure Motorsports and Diebroke Motorsports have stepped up to contribute to this event. All drivers who attempt to compete in the BOSS show are guaranteed $100 at every event. But with the help of these fine sponsors, the first 5 non transfers in each B-Main will now earn $150, $140, $130, $120 and $110 each. The BOSS sprint series has no registration fees and all teams are welcome to participate. Pit gates will open at 2 pm on Saturday with the BOSS drivers meeting scheduled for 3:45. The BOSS teams will fire motors at 5:10 pm with hot laps at 5:40 pm. Heat race action begins at 6 pm. For more information, you can find Eldora Speedway at www.eldoraspeedway.com or go to the series website at www.buckeyesprints.com .
