Helms Happiest in 360's/Stewart Stalwart in Mini's/ Adams Absolute in Reno Hobbys
K-C Raceway Results

CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-Jeff and Vicki Schrader's Breast Cancer Awareness Night/Labor Day Special provided quite a bit of fireworks for the loyal fans at the Ross County Speedplant. Caleb Helms, Findlay, Ohio blasted by Butch Schroeder on the last lap of an exciting 360 sprint main, while Beau Stewart claimed the Mini-sprint main, and Jamie Adams took the Dan Reno Hobby Stock feature.
For 24 laps Butch Schroeder was the class of the field, but on the most important lap, young Caleb Helms was at the top of the class, making a daring last-lap pass in an exciting finish to post the win. The anticipation that Helms may chase down Schroeder kept the race exciting, however, fans burst with applause once Helms launched his J&J hard into turn one for the race winning pass on the last circuit.
Schroeder, just off a new track record for the potent 360's, jumped into the early lead with Helms jumping hastily into second. Schroeder burst into a straight-away lead, but quickly it was apparent that Helms was reeling in his catch. By lap 12 Helms caught Schroeder in traffic, but worked it to his advantage and back out to a hefty lead.
Helms's Hampshire Powered J&J Chassis was caught up in the traffic and actually made contact with the car of Shaun Dancer. "I banged wheels with someone and didn't know if it would handle after that," Helms said. Helms gathered it back up and resumed chase, but when the five-lap signal was given, it appeared Schroeder's lead was insurmountable.
The last two circuits, Helms made up for lost time and reeled in Schroeder for the set-up with one lap to go. Helms caught Schroeder going into turn one and drove in with a speed-dive past the veteran open wheeler.
Said a jubilant Helms in victory lane. "I just looked up and...there he was, so I drove on past and amazing enough he never passed me back. I'd just like to thank Jesus. He is my King. It feels so great to be here in victory lane."
Despite a mud-packed front rim, Helms said, "I don't think it (the mud) hurt me. The track was heavy up in the groove and I never noticed it. I think the key to winning was just making consistent laps and keeping up my momentum."
Helms thanked his crew, Dad, family and "especially Brian Kennemah" for all of their help.
Starr Homes of Belfontaine presented a $200 bonus to the third place car of Tim Allison, who finished just behind the high-flying front-runners. Much of the race Allison had to hold off the charges of Todd Heuerman and Dennis Yoakem. Heuerman tried high and low to no avail, finally losing Allison in a gaggle of lapped traffic.
Rounding out the top ten were Caleb Helms, Butch Schroeder, Tim Allison, Todd Heuerman, Dennis Yoakem, Shaun Dancer, Jesse McCreary, Chris Plascak, and John Kettlewell.
In the AMSA Mini-Sprint Main Beau Stewart secured the early lead, then endured a late race battle with Jeff Barnhart to post the big win. Several cautions slowed the event, but the field lost only a pair of cars as the mini's put on a great deal of passing back in the pack.
Nick Roberts paced the field for the first six laps, but what became perhaps the race-winning move was a daring pass by Stewart on the outside.
Said Stewart, "I got half a car length beside him and saw a hole. It looked like it would fit so I drove it on in and I went on by."
Jeff Barnhart blasted into second and gave chase of Stewart's FOZ Chassis/Yamaha. "The car was working good and the track was great. It still is tacky. Then I saw that car sitting in turn four and looked up and saw the #2 car beside me. I thought uh-oh, we're going to have to do this all over again."
Kevin Roberts and Nick Roberts duked it out for third later in the race, while Rick Taylor pulled into the mix in a battle for the top five. Stewart endured a lap 18 caution for Lee Underwood, as Barnhart stomped the throttle for a final try at the win in the closely contested main. At the line Kevin Roberts claimed fourth in a wild photo finish for position over Taylor.
Rounding out the top ten were Beau Stewart, Jeff Barnhart, Neil Roberts, Kevin Roberts, Rick Taylor, Kevin Roberts, JR., Jeb Lowder, Greg Nichols, Trey Gustin, and Craig Stower. Former K-C Flagman Chris Smalley just missed a top ten with an eleventh place finish. Jeb Lowder was the hard charger of the race, moving up eight spots.
