Hummingbird Speedway Race Report
Saturday, July 29, 2017
By: Randy Albert

Hummingbird Speedway was back in action on Saturday night.  Fans young and old alike enjoyed mingling with the drivers and cars parked on the track for Fan Appreciation Night.  Candy and autographs flowed freely as they took the opportunity see the cars they cheer for each week and talk to the drivers that wheel them around the third mile oval.  The speedway thanks MJ Services from Reynoldsville for sponsoring the trophies for the evenings racing action.

Success came to Dustin Challingsworth in the Sunny 106.5 Pure Stocks.  Doug Surra continued to be the top dog in the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck and Repair Services Semi-Late Models.  Bruce Hartzfeld took the top spot in the Street Stock division.  In the BWP Bats Late Model class, Charlie Powell from Brookville found the checkered flag to his liking.  And in the final race of the evening Zack Frantz was the victor in the Aarons of DuBois Front Wheel Drive cars.

The Sunny 106.5 Pure Stock cars lined up for the first race of the evening.  Eric Lucas and Rich Anderson made up the front row.  A little mid-pack mayhem allowed Dustin Challingsworth to slip into the second spot with Tim Steis quickly working his way through the pack.  A caution placed Challingsworth on the outside of Lucas and Steis right behind him.  Challingsworth is tough from any position and a clear path to the front was just what he needed to take the lead.  Lucas was hanging tough staying on the rear bumper of Challingsworth but Steis wedged his way into the second spot going into turn three.  Steis set his sights on Challingsworth working the bottom and making his car very wide in the turns.  Challingsworth had to take the long way around but Steis managed to get by to take the lead.  Challingsworth fought back on the bottom but the two got together in turn four bringing out the caution.  Steis retired to the pits leaving Challingsworth to restart at the front of the pack.  Challingsworth had some pressure from Brad Benton but held him off leaving him to do battle with Duke Davidson and Eric Lucas.  They were mixing it up three and four wide for the second position along with Josh Fields who was down a couple of laps but no less competitive. Challingsworth took the win with Davidson edging out Benton for second on the last lap.

Josh Fields and Dustin Challingsworth were the winners of the heat races.

Neil Wilson Jr and BJ Hudson led the field of Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair & Services Semi-Late Models onto the track.  Flagman Bob Connor let the green flag fly with Wilson in control.  Doug Surra, who started behind Wilson, kept his composure running down low against the tires and in traffic, moving into the lead on the second lap.  He didn’t waste any time slipping into the outside groove coming out of turn four and setting the car on auto-pilot.  Doug Surra, auto pilot that is.  Nick Erskine navigated his way through traffic into second as Tom Kronenwetter also got by Hudson but couldn’t mount an offensive on Erskine.  A mid-race caution gave Erskine an chance to show Surra his right front fender for a few laps but Surra stayed in the high groove and in the throttle just enough to keep the tires working and moving the car forward.  Erskine encountered a lap car late in the race slowing his pace a little and John Lee worked his way into third place but it may not have mattered as Surra was in control.  The car looked to be spot on and the driver had the experience to know what to do with it not overworking it and keeping it in the line that was working for him best.

Doug Surra and Jon Lee won the two heat races in the division.

The first lap of the Street Stock race was started by Rich Howell on the inside and Bob Rossman on the outside.  Brandon Connor quickly moved into the second spot riding the tail of Howell looking for an opening to take the lead position.  He slowly took the lead foot by foot by working the high line forcing Howell to settle for the low groove. A caution reset the field but Connor set to work with the same strategy as Howell stayed tough running the bottom.  Matt Hugill moved up to the back bumper of Howell taking the position just before another caution reset the field.  This time Hugill was on the inside but Bruce Hartzfeld made a move on the restart relegating Hugill to the outside with Hartzfeld moving into second.  Rossman was back in the game and Howell wasn’t giving any ground as they fought for the fourth and fifth position.  Hartzfeld looked low on Connor for a number of laps but dropped back behind him a few laps later, perhaps to cool his tires or gain momentum for a run on the leader.  Connor appeared to have it under control but another caution allowed Hartzfeld to gain a slight edge on the bottom just taking the lead in time for a final caution.  That put him in the lead for the single file restart. Howell, Rossman, and Hugill were putting on a show for the third through fifth positions behind the leaders but all eyes were on Hartzfeld and Connor.  Hartzfeld took advantage of his efforts to take the lead earlier and held the mid to high line blocking Connors way to the front as the white flag flew, followed by the checkered, giving him the win.

Matt Hugill and Bruch Hartzfeld were the winners of the heat races.

The BWP bats race was a traffic jam from the start but Bernie Whiteford and Scott Alvetro had the pleasure of being at the front of the pack.  Alvetro quickly had his hands full with Charlie Powell, Jerry Redden and Paul Kot.  Powell moved into second place early but cautions plagued the beginning of the race.  As the cautions clicked off, Powell managed to take the lead with Kot in second, Whiteford in second and Alvetro holding off Chris Farrell and Denny Fenton.  Everyone was riding the cushion but Chris Farrell.  He pushing the envelope hard down low and came into contact with Kot.  Kot stayed in the second spot leaving Farrell spinning in turn four to restart at the back of the field.  Powell held the high ground through the restarts with Kot looking low but not finding traction, settling in to run behind the leader.  Alvetro, Redden, and Whiteford were under attack by Farrell who wasted no time marching back to the front of the pack.  Steve Scaife Jr worked his way into the mix for third as Kot got another look at the lead on a restart but again had to settle for the view of the back bumper of Powell.  Powell held on for the win followed by Kot, Scaife, and Farrell.

Four heat races were held for the BWP Bats Late Models.  Chris Farrell, Scott Alvetro, Bernie Whiteford, and Billy Dickson were the winners.

The Aarons of DuBois Front Wheel Drive cars closed out a late night of racing activity. Zack Frantz and James Ogden made up the front row with Frantz out to the early lead.  Zachery Lennox and Eric Luzier gave chase in second and third with Ogden relegated back to fourth.  Frantz held the advantage working through lap traffic until a late race caution bunched up the field.  Luzier gave it his best shot running low and getting up alongside the leader but the high grove was where the traction and action was and the leader began to pull away.  Lennox took advantage of the high line also slipping past Luzier in the closing lap as Randy Albert worked his way into the fourth spot from his back of the pack starting position.  Frantz took the win and closed out the 2017 Fan Appreciation Night.

Zack Frantz also won the first heat race with James Ogden winning the second.

Hartzfeld and Albert Pick Up First Wins of the Season At Hummingbird Speedway

(Reynoldsville, PA)  Three Familiar faces returned to victory lane while two drivers picked up their first wins of the 2017 on Saturday night.  Fans were greeted by a cool mid-July evening with plenty of thrills, spills and chills on the 1/3 mile clay oval just north of Reynoldsville.  John Lee of Mahaffey, Chris Farrell of Clearfield, and Tim Steis of St Marys each claimed victory for the third time this year, while Bruce Hartzfeld of Rockton and Randy Albert of Morrisdale made their first appearance in victory lane in 2017.  Trophies for the evening were sponsored in memory of longtime friend and fan Ben Bailey and presented by the Bailey Family.

The Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi-Late Models were the first to hit the track for the evening.  Jon Lee of Mahaffey got a quick jump on the field to begin the race.  Nick  Erskine, also of Mahaffey, provided an early challenge to Lee with a few looks to the inside in the early stages of the twenty lap feature event.  There were several early battles throughout the field, and Erskine kept his sights on Lee until a caution flag would fly on lap eight.  Lee chose the outside line on each double-file restart, and his groove allowed him to put a five car-length lead on Erskine as the crossed flags came out, signaling halfway.  After starting in the thirteenth position, Doug Surra of Kersey had quietly moved up into fourth place after the halfway mark.  A late restart allowed Nick Loffredo of Avis to get a run on Erskine and take away the second spot.  Surra would also work his way by Erskine and challenged Loffredo for second.  Loffredo would manage to hold his ground and fend off a hard-charging Doug Surra,  but Jon Lee would walk away with his third win of the season, followed by Loffredo, Surra, Erskine, and Matt Howell. Heat winners were Surra, Erskine, and Todd English.

Bruce Hartzfeld of Rockton grabbed the early lead in the Street Stock division, but Rich Howell of Clearfield would quickly utilize the inside lane to take it away in the opening laps.  Hartzfeld kept his machine well within striking distance trying to reclaim the lead with Brandon Connor looking to get in on the action from the third spot.  A couple early yellow flags worked to the advantage of last week's double-feature winner, Fuzzy Fields as he worked his way by his teammate, Brian Rhed, to move into fourth by lap five.  Connor looked high and low to get by Hartzfeld and was unsuccessful.  Fields began to challenge the top three cars and managed to pull alongside Connor and eventually make the pass for third.  Hartzfeld managed to reel Howell back in with some help from lapped traffic, but Fields had now pulled alongside him to set up a side-by-side battle for second.  Hartzfeld would manage to fend off Fields and also capture the lead from Howell.  Fields didnt let up as he also would get by Howell and a late-race caution would reset the field with two laps remaining.  On the final restart, Fields immediately made a move on the leader, and the two would battle door-to-door for the final two circuits.  It looked like Fields had the advantage coming down the back straightaway, but Hartzfeld had all of the momentum coming out of turn four and was able to hold a car-length advantage over Fields to claim his first feature win of the season.  Howell, Connor and Rhed rounded out the top five.  Hartzfeld, Howell, and Fields also won their heats.

Bernie Whiteford of Hastings, and Jason Witherite of Luthersburg led the BWP Bat Late Models onto the track for the night's third feature event.  Derek Rodkey and Chris Farrell got the early advantage on the start with Rodkey  taking the early lead.  Farrell found an opening on the inside of Rodkey and was able to find enough traction to move into the lead by lap three.  A mishap involving several cars would lead to a lengthy caution flag and a single-file restart.  After the restart, Steve Scaife would challenge Rodkey for second, and Scott Alvetro of Reynoldsville would also join the party in a three-way battle for the second position.  Farrell pulled away from the pack, while Scaife and Rodkey also pulled away from Alvetro at the halfway mark.  Scaife and Rodkey would raced door-to-door for several laps.  Rodkey was running mostly on the outside but eventually captured second using the inner groove.  Points-leader Denny Fenton had worked his way into the top-five and had just gotten by Alvetro, but a mechanical failure would force him to the pit area, ending his night.  Jeremy Ohl would also work his way by Alvetro, and would  overcome Rodkey for second position.  Farrell would hold onto a comfortable lead as he would go onto win his third of the year, with Ohl, Rodkey, Alvetro, and Witherite rounding out the top five. Scaife, Farrell, Rodkey, and Witherite picked up the heat wins.

Eric Lucas of Phillipsburg, and Zach Gustafson of Weedville led the Sunny106.5 Pure Stocks onto the racing surface for the fourth feature event of the evening.  As usual, the competitors of the aforementioned division broke out into a fierce battle for position right at the drop of flagman Bob Connor's green flag.  An early three-wide battle for the lead would ensue and Tim Steis of St Marys would eventually come out of the melee with the lead.  Last week's winner, Josh Fields of Brockport, started thirteenth but navigated his machine into fifth coming up the halfway point of the race.  However he would pull his car to the infield with a mechanical failure, ending his run and also retiring him for the evening.  While Steis continued to lead the way,  Dustin Challingsworth of St Marys and newcomer, Kevin Van Amburg would battle side-by-side for a number of laps.  The competitors were coming out of turn four and the two would end up making contact, forcing Van Amburg into the front strectch the wall and forcing him to retire for the evening.  Lucas and Gustafson would find themselves battling for the second spot while Steis enjoyed a comfortable lead in the closing laps.  Steis would go onto win, with Gustafson taking back second, followed by Lucas, Challinsworth, and Al Rishel rounding out the top five.  Heat race winners on the evening were Steis and Fields.

The Aaron's of DuBois Four Cylinders were the fifth and final event of the evening. Jimmy Ogden and Eric Luzier, both of Clearfield, would make up the front row to take the green flag.  Aaron Luzier of Olanta quickly got by Ogden to join Eric Luzier and challenge him for the lead.  A couple of early cautions would keep the field bunched up, and the Luziers would continue to wage a continuous battle for first.  A three-wide battle for third would breakout with Jim Fye of Reynoldsville making his case and working his way into the top three.  After a rough start to the evening, Randy Albert of Morrisdale had managed to pick apart the field of cars and work his way into the top five at the halfway mark.  The Luziers continued to lead the way with Albert looking to find some traction on the outside of Fye.  Albert would get the run he needed to take the third spot away, and a a caution would reset the field and set up a single-file restart.  Albert looked to the outside lane once again to make a move on Eric Luzier for second with just two circuits remaining.  Aaron Luzier was leading the field around for the checkered flag but a fire under the hood of Mike Mayhew forced the race under a red flag before the checkered flag could be brought out.  While the cars were preparing to take the green for the one-lap shootout, Aaron Luzier's car was unable to restart, forcing him to the pits and gifting Albert with the lead on the final restart.  Albert held onto the lead in the final circuit, and was followed to the line by Fye, Ogden, Eric Luzier and Daniel Clark.  Eric and Aaron Luzier were the heat race winners.

A total of 85 cars were on hand for the evening. Hummingbird Speedway features lots of thrills, spills, chills, and a family-friendly environment at central Pennsylvania's 1/3 mile action track.  Five-division racing will return to action next Saturday Night at 7:30 with gates opening at 4:30.

Hummingbird Speedway Race Report and Results

10 July 2017 - 04:50 PM

I have not been posting these since I no longer do the write up.  Doing it and racing at the same time was getting too unbalanced with family time.  I will try to post it each week when I receive it from the speedway.

Hummingbird Speedway Race Report
For Immediate Release
Saturday, July 8th, 2017
By Steven Curry

Reynoldsville- Another beautiful, sun-drenched sky welcomed drivers and fans from all over the Central Pennsylvania region back to Hummingbird Speedway for Mid-Season Championship night. Fuzzy Fields from Brockway in the Street Stocks, Paul Kot from Brockway in the BWP Bats Late Models, Josh Fields from Brockport in the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks, Doug Surra from Kersey in the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi-Late Models, and Aaron Luzier from Clearfield in the Aaron's of DuBois Front-Wheel Drive Four-Cylinders each took the checkers and picked up a trophy in memory of Jack Salada. Fuzzy Fields would double-down on the night and win the June 24th make-up feature as Randy Albert picked up his first win of 2017 in the Aaron's of DuBois Front-Wheel Drive Four-Cylinder make-up feature.

Fuzzy Fields and Bruce Hartzfeld led a packed field of Street Stocks trackside for their 20-lap feature race. Fields jumped out to the early lead but a quick lap one caution would setup a complete restart. Another couple cautions would keep things tight until the race finally saw a long green-flag run. Fields paced the way with Brian Rhed, Rich Howell, Brandon Connor, and hard-charging Bruce Hartzfeld, from the back to the top 5, following behind just before another caution would bunch things back up. On the ensuing restart, both Connor and Hartzfeld were able squeak past Howell to take 3rd and 4th as the VSI duo of Fields and Rhed took-off from the field. Hartzfeld then set his sights on Connor for the third spot and would take it just before another caution would bunch things up once again. On the final restart, Hartzfeld challenged Rhed for the second spot which allowed Fields to open up a big lead in the closing laps. Hartzfeld and Rhed battled hard for several laps until Hartzfeld took the spot with just a few laps left. Then, he set his sights on Fields for the lead but ran out of laps as Fields picked up the win. Hartzfeld, Rhed, Connor, and Howell rounded out the top 5. Fields, Hartzfeld, and Rhed won the heat races.

Denny Fenton and Chris Farrell led the BWP Bats Late Models to the track for their 25-lap feature event. Farrell jumped out to the early lead and started to pull away from the field as Paul Kot challenged Fenton for the second spot and took it just a few laps in. After a quick caution, the race would be ready for it's final restart of the night. On the final restart, Farrell received a lot of pressure from Kot as they battled hard for the race lead. It would take several laps until Kot would be able to clear Farrell and take the lead. Kot started to pull away from the field as Farrell received pressure once again but this time from Fenton for the 2nd spot. Fenton and Farrell battled hard for 2nd for a handful of laps until Fenton cleared Farrell to take the spot. There were no more challenges for the lead in the closing laps as Kot picked up the feature win. Fenton, Farrell, Derek Rodkey, and Kenny Schaffer rounded out the top 5. Fenton and Farrell won the heat races.

Tim Steis and Josh Fields led the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks trackside for their 15-lap feature race. Steis jumped out to the early lead on the initial start with Fields close behind. Steis would lead for a couple laps until Fields got to his inside and passed him on lap 3. Fields began to pull away from Steis and the rest of the field until a caution would fly bringing the field back together. On the restart, Fields and Steis continued to battle for the lead as newcomer, Tyrone Hendley, and Kylee Brown ran 3rd and 4th behind the leaders. After many laps of battling between Fields and Steis, Fields began to pull away from Steis. The race remained green the rest of the way as Josh Fields picked up the win. Steis, Hendley, Brown, and Sam Brink rounded out the top 5. Steis won the lone heat race.

Jon Lee and Tommy Kronenwetter made up the front row for the 20-lap Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi-Late Model feature. After a couple of quick cautions on the initial start, Lee would jump out to the early lead with Kronenwetter close behind. Another caution would keep things close. Then, on the restart, Lee pulled away from Kronenwetter and the rest of the field as Doug Surra began to challenge Kronenwetter for the 2nd spot. Surra battled with him briefly until he completed the pass just before another caution came out. Three more cautions would fly until the race would finally have a long green flag run. Lee continued to lead with Surra close behind as the race neared the 5 laps to go mark. A final caution flag would fly with 4 laps to go that would bunch the field up one more time. On the final restart, Surra used the bottom line to his advantage to pull up alongside Lee in the closing laps and battle with him for the lead. Surra would complete the pass for the lead on the final lap, taking a win away from Lee. Lee, Kronenwetter, Kevin Dickson, and B.J. Hudson rounded out the top 5. Lee and Kronenwetter won the heat races.

Zack Frantz and Aaron Luzier led a full field of Aaron's of DuBois Front-Wheel Drive Four-Cylinders trackside for their 12-lap feature event. Luzier pulled out to the early lead with Frantz second but several early race caution flags kept things very close. On the following restart after the cautions, the field drove down into turns 1 and 2 and the hood on Frantz' car flew up on the windshield, causing him to go to the pits and get the hood removed. On the ensuing restart, Aaron and Eric Luzier were now battling for the lead until Frantz' car came to a rest along the outside wall retiring him for the evening. The next restart had once again both Luzier brothers battling for the lead with Randy Albert behind in 3rd and Jimmy Ogden 4th. A caution flew a few laps later for Ogden who was in a crash that would retire him for the evening. On the final restart, Eric Luzier gave his brother a valiant challenge for the lead but didn't have enough in the closing laps as Aaron Luzier picked up the win. Eric Luzier, Albert, Rick Feely, and Dylon Focker rounded out the top 5. Zack Frantz, Aaron Luzier, and Eric Luzier won the heat races.

Joe Stajnrajh Jr. and Rich Howell led the Street Stocks trackside for their June 24th make-up feature. Howell took the lead on the initial start and started to pull away slightly from the field. A couple laps later, Fuzzy Fields caught Howell and passed him for the lead just a handful of laps in. Fields began to pull away from Howell and the rest of the field until a caution would bunch the field back together. On the ensuing restart and following laps, Fields would pace the field as both Brian Rhed and Brandon Connor got around Howell to move into 2nd and 3rd respectively. But no one had anything for Fields as he would go on to win his second feature of the night. Rhed, Connor, Howell, and Rosman rounded out the top 5.

Adam Gee and Eric Luzier led the Aaron's of DuBois Front-Wheel Drive Four-Cylinders to the track for their June 24th make-up feature race. Luzier took the lead on the initial start and built a bit of a lead over Gee and the rest of the field. Randy Albert started to track down Luzier as the laps continued to click away. Albert caught Luzier a few laps later and battled with him for the lead. Albert completed the pass for the lead on Luzier a couple laps later and began to pull away from Luzier and the rest of the field. Nobody had anything for Albert in the closing laps as he went on to pick up his first win of 2017. Luzier, Gee, Aaron Luzier, and Daniel Clark rounded out the top 5.

Speedway Notes: 74 cars were on hand and racing was completed by 12:30am. Racing will continue next Saturday with trophies in memory of Ben Bailey by the Bailey family. Gates open at 4:30 with racing at 7. For more information call the track office at (814) 653-8400 or visit the tracks’ website at www.hummingbirdspeedway.com.

Hummingbird Speedway Race Report
Saturday September 10, 2016
By: Randy Albert

Hummingbird Speedway closed out its season on Saturday night with the Mark Deasey Memorial Late Model race.  Mark, a dedicated race fan and friend who rarely missed a race, unfortunately lost his battle with cancer in November of 2015.  He was a diehard Late Model fan as well as a big fan of the late Sheetz McGarvey.  Marks family made the night special presenting the winners with very nice trophies, sponsoring the “Dash for Cash”, and providing a special purse for the Pure Stock drivers.   A special thank you to the Deasey family for making the evening’s racing program special for everyone.

The BWP Bats Late Model cars were the feature event of the evening with a “Dash for Cash” and 35 lap feature race.  Andy Fries from Mercersburg bested the field in the main event with Mike Blose from New Bethlehem coming out on top in the dash.  Sunny 106.5 Pure Stocks were competing for a special purse also with Dustin Challingsworth coming out on top.  Other winners for the evening included Andrew Gordon in the Street Stocks and Eric Luzier from Clearfield in the Aarons of DuBois Front Wheel Drive cars.

The Sunny 106.5 Pure Stock cars lined up for their feature race with Dustin Challingsworth and Matt Howell making up the front row and lightening threatening in the western sky.  The lead duo kept it tight staying side by side with Mike Miller and Ben Krause watching the action from the second row while Josh Fields moved up into the fourth position.  After a mid-race caution Challingsworth took the outside line for the restart leaving Howell to contend with Miller and Fields who was moving up with each lap.  Fields wedged his way forward in turn three passing Miller then made the same move in turn one to take Howell.  The three worked the racing surface to gain an advantage on each other as Challingsworth moved out to a five car length lead.  With the laps winding down Fields eventually cleared Miller and Howell but didn’t have enough time to catch Challingsworth before the checkered flag flew.  Challingsworth tops off another great season with the win.

Dustin Challingsworth also won the lone Pure Stock heat race.

Hummingbird Speedway opens up its rules for the final Late Model race of the season to allow aluminum block cars to compete with the regular drivers.  The BWP Bats sponsored race started 21 of 22 cars with Mike Blose lined up inside Andy Fries for the start of the race.  Bob Sullinger waved the green flag and the first of 35 laps was being contested.  Fries took the early lead while Blose dropped back into third behind Shawn Claar with Denny Fenton riding in fourth.  Both Chris Farrell from Clearfield and Duane Stiner from Houtzdale made up a lot of ground coming into the picture early but their progress slowed upon reaching the lead pack.  Blose continued to ride behind Claar but made the inside move half way through the race setting his sights on the leader.  Stiner and Farrell slipped by Fenton on a restart to do battle for the fourth and fifth spots while Close looked to “close” the gap on Fries.  Farrell moved forward under Clarr leaving Stiner to contend with Fenton who was coming back from losing the positions earlier.  Farrell looked like he may be on the move again as he worked under Claar after a caution restart. The familiar car of Paul Kot was beginning to come around as the tires heated up and either sent the competitors backward for forward.  Kot was definitely moving forward, Clarr was moving backward.  Kot was in typical form working down low inching forward on the other drivers with each lap.  Fries had his mirror full of Close with both cars working their way through slower traffic.  Blose came out of the jam in the lead and looked like he was going to pull away but a caution stopped his progress and reset the field.  On the restart Close had a small lead with Fries not letting him get away.  Farrell had Kot at his left door panel with Luke Hoffner and Ed Connor challenging Fenton on the outside farther back.  Farrell, Fries and Kot all wanted a shot at the leader, Close, going three wide at times trying to get near enough to make a pass.  Fries apparently felt the pressure moved away from Farrell and Kot up onto the back bumper of Close.  He nosed under him on the backstretch and held the low line into turns three and four to retake the lead.  Kot managed to make the pass stick on Farrell then charging hard into turn three under Close and elbowing his way through turn four coming out in second place on the front stretch.  Kot was trying to make up the ground on Fries but the laps were winding down and he was running out of time.  With the white flag flying Kot moved to within a car length down the back stretch and shot the nose of his car under the left rear of Fries.  For a moment it looked like he may have had enough to make another pass like the one earlier on Close but Fries was in control with a strong car keeping the local driver at bay and taking the win.  Kot settled for second a half car length behind with Blose in third and Farrell coming home fourth with Hoffner on his tail.

Three heat races in the Late Model division were won by Rodney Philips, Mike Blose, and Charlie Powell.

Street Stocks were next to line up and take a shot at the checkered flag and all the glory that goes along with it. Fuzzy Fields and Andrew Gordon graced the front row with Fields leading the first lap but Gordon not giving up the fight, coming back on the low grove to nearly lead the second.  He stayed in the skirmish making the pass a few laps later with Gary Luzier and Bill Philips Jr looking on from third and fourth.  Luzier followed suit but it took him a few tries to complete the inside pass on Fields.  He could get up alongside of him in turns three and four but couldn’t make it stick.  A late race caution put him back behind Fields but not for long.  With the white flag flying and Gordon leading by a straight away the only thing left to contest was second place.  Luzier again put the car down low starting the move in turns one and two and continuing it in turns three and four.  Coming out of the turn Fields nose was at Luzier’s rear wheel.  Just before the flag stand it was at his front wheel.  At the flag stand, where it counts he was just a nose short and the raced was over with Luzier taking second place behind the winner Gordon.

Fuzzy Fields was the winner of the lone Street Stock heat race.

Closing out the nigh of racing entertainment was the Aarons of DuBois Front Wheel Driver Four Cylinder cars.  This was also a short field of cars but not without their own drama and excitement.  Mike Lucas and Eric Luzier set the pace for the start of the race.  Luzier stepped out to the early lead and Tom Peters move up inside Lucas to look for second place.  Lucas held his ground on the outside with Jerry Walls tucking in behind Lucas or Peters depending on who looked like they were going to make the pass but Peters eventually had to check up and tangled with a couple cars behind him leaving Lucas and Walls to chase Luzier.  On the restart it was Luzier, Lucas and Walls nose to tail with Peters making up ground in fourth.  Peters eventually caught the pack and ducked down low coming out of turn four.  He couldn’t hold the line coming into turn one and faded high into the loose dirt eventually tagging the wall hard coming out of turn two ending his night.  On the restart Lucas ducked low to try and find the way to the front allowing Walls to move up on his outside.  Lucas lost ground down low giving second place to Walls on the white flag lap.  Race car drivers, be it full blown late models or front wheel drive, never want to settle for second place.  Walls saw the light at the end of the tunnel and dropped low on Luzier on the last lap coming down the back stretch.  Lucas by then had slid around behind walls and got back in the high grove coming up on the outside of Walls reversing the order from a lap earlier.  With Luzier holding on and taking the checkered flag Lucas came back to take the second position away from Walls under Bob Sullinger’s perch by a third of a car length.

Mike Lucas won the lone heat race.

That race closed out the 2016 season of racing at Hummingbird Speedway.  The Caltagarone family would like to thank everyone for their support throughout the year.  Without car owners, drivers, track workers, and especially the fans Hummingbird could not bring local dirt track racing to central Pennsylvania.

The annual award banquet is scheduled for October 15, 2016,,6:00 PM at the Bellamauro Banquet Hall in Reynoldsville.  Come and enjoy good food and entertainment with your favorite drivers.  For more information or tickets call the track office at 653-8400 or visit the track’s website at www.hummingbirdspeedway.com.

Hummingbird Speedway Race Report
Saturday September 3, 2016
By: Randy Albert

Hummingbird Speedway remembered one of its own on Saturday night, Mrs. Ina Caltagarone.  Ina, dedicated wife and partner of track owner Louie Caltagarone passed away a few years ago and this race took a moment to remember and honor her efforts to promote and support local dirt track racing in central Pennsylvania.

The highlight of the evening was the Street Stock division with a “Dash for Cash” and 30 lap feature race.  Josh Frantz from DuBois doubled up on his success in the division taking home his first win in the division and the special purse for the win in the feature race while Bob Connor, also from DuBois, made off with the loot in the 8 lap “Dash for Cash” shootout.

Other winners for the evening included Chris Farrell from Clearfield in the BWP Bats Late Model race; Nick Loffredo out of Avis in the Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi-Late Model cars; Dustin Challingsworth in the Sunny 106.5 Radio Pure Stock Division, and Matt Bryant from Weedville in the Aarons of DuBois Front Wheel Drive cars.

The 8 lap “Dash for Cash” shootout was first up and included the likes of Josh Frantz, Bob Rossman, Andrew Gordon, Bob Connor, Brian Rhed and Fuzzy Fields.  Frantz moved out to an early lead with brown pressing him early until he bobbled in turn two opening the door for Rossman and Connor.  Connors, in non-typical fashion, moved his machine to the outside line pulling up along Frantz in turns three and four and making the pass down the front stretch.  Frantz battled back for a lap or so but began to lose ground to Connor.  Fields managed to get by Frantz on the final lap while Connor went on to take the win and the cash.

The BWP Bats Super Late Models were the first full event of the evening with Chris Farrell lined up inside Duane Stiner for the start of the race.  With the wave of Bob Sullinger’s green flag the race was up and running and Farrell was out in front. Ed Connor, Duane Stiner and Derek Rodkey all wanted a piece of the leader but they all had to settle for the second thru fourth racing action as none of them could gain ground on the leader Farrell.  A couple of cautions reeled the speedster Farrell back in but it wasn’t long until his lead was reestablished.  Stiner and Rodkey kept it interesting in third and fourth but the short field allowed for a long green flag run and Farrell gained a little in each lap stretching his lead to half a track near the end and the checkered flag.

Chris Farrell and Duane Stiner won the heat races for the Late Models.

Bob Connor and Fuzzy Fields graced the front row for the start of the Ina Caltagarone Street Stock special.  Fields and Connor managed to stay out front for the first half of the race.  Fields held a slight edge running the outside line with Connor holding just off his left rear quarter panel running a tight second.  Josh Frantz and Brian Rhed had to settle for the second tier waiting for the leaders to sort out their differences.  Fields slowed coming out of turn four with mechanical difficulties allowing Connor to control the lead and the others to try their luck which now included Bob Rossman, Andrew Gordon and Ryan Sager.  Connor was leading, but by no means dominating, as Fields separated himself from the second wave and moved to the outside of Connor coming down the front stretch.  The duo did the side by side shuffle for a number of laps and through many cautions.  Rhed was right there throughout the efforts of Connor holding a slight edge along with Frantz trying valiantly gaining a slight advantage with each lap.  All three crossed in front of the flag stand nearly dead even as the laps began to wind down, setting up the scenario for the end of the race.  Frantz looked like he faded high in turn four giving Connor back the lead with Rhed looking low. The three again lined up coming off of turn four with Rhed low, Connor in the middle and Frantz high.  With the white flag coming out Frantz went way high in turn four and instead of  slowing his progress the car hooked up and pulled hard headed down the front stretch.  He carried his momentum through turns one and two leaving Connor and Rhed to decide who would be the runner up.  Frantz took his first Street Stock win with a well-run and hard fought race.  He was followed closely across the line in a nearly photo finish for second between Connor and Rhed with Connor taking the runner up spot.

Street Stock heat race winners included Josh Frantz, Bob Connor, and Fuzzy Fields.

The Swanson Heavy Duty Truck Repair Semi-Late Model cars moved onto the track led by Jason Beichner and Kevin Dickson.  Beichner and Dickson were quickly joined by Nick Loffredo for a three wide foray until Beichner looped his car in turn four.  After the restart, Loffredo and Dickson kept the heat on each other running up front with Kevin Clark, Mike Blazer and Deegen Watt keeping track from 5 car lengths back.   A series of miscues and cautions kept it interesting or at least allowed the likes of Loffredo and Beichner to get back to the front quickly to challenge Dickson who held a slight lead through the stop and go racing action.  Loffredo was putting heavy pressure on the leader Dickson until Dickson got loose in turn two with Loffredo going sideways to avoid the leader.  Unfortunately for Dickson he was charged with the caution and had to restart at the back of the pack.  Loffredo took control of the remainder of the race with Beichner coming back to take second and Clark staying in the hunt for the duration placing third.

Heat race winners included Jason Beichner and Kevin Dickson.

It was a tight battle at the beginning of the Sunny 106.5 Pure Stock race with Josh Fields and Dustin Challingsworth followed closely by Mike Miller and Ben Krause.  The four were a tight pack for a few laps until Fields and Challingsworth broke free of the pack but Fields got loose causing him to loop his car in turn four resetting the field with Miller and Krause at the front for the restart.  Kraus was looking good after clearing Miller but Challingsworth was moving up on his bumper with Fields back in the hunt from the restart.  Matt Howell was also in the game looking to take on the leaders.  Challingsworth nosed under Krause to take the lead with Miller and Fields nose to tail behind him.  Miller and Krause made contact as they worked around a slower car in turn one opening the door for Howell to shoot up into second.  Fields followed suit and shot through the opening as well into third.  Challingsworth made the best of the others misfortune taking the win with Howell just holding off Fields for second.

Heat race winners included Josh Fields and Dustin Challingsworth.

The Aarons of DuBois Front Wheel Drive cars closed out the memorial races for Ina Caltagarone.  Last week’s winner Jim Fye and Matt Bryant led the hard chargers to start the race.  Bryant took the early lead with Fye being challenged by Mike Lucas and Eric Boozel.  Fye managed to hold them off with Boozel eventually getting by Lucas. Bryant had control of the race with most of the action for second through fourth and back in the pack where “rubbin is racin” was on display.  A single caution gave the competitors one last shot at Bryant but he continued to extend his lead with each lap going on to take the win.

Jim Fye and Matt Bryant were the winners of the heat races.

The final event of the season at Hummingbird Speedway is the Mark Deasey Memorial Late Model Open to be held on September 10th.    This race pays $150.00 to start for a 35 lap feature with a $2,000.00 to win purse and lap money.  There will also be a dash for cash for the late models as well as a special purse for the Pure Stocks of $400.00 to win.  The Late Model race is open to aluminum block cars.  Due to the number of cars expected this event will start at 6:00 PM. Join the Hummingbird family for this exciting upcoming event.

Hummingbird offers some of the best in family friendly racing in central Pennsylvania.  Gates open at 4:00 pm with racing at 6. For more information call the track office at 653-8400 or visit the track’s website at www.hummingbirdspeedway.com.
