CNB Bank Raceway Park is working to finalize plans for the 2013 Keystone Open to be held on Saturday, October 12. On the card will be Street Stocks, Pure Stocks (aka Chargers) and 4-cylinders. CNB plans to sell gently used asphalt tires at a fraction of the new cost. Tire details are still being finalized and will be published soon. We are planning to have the three divisions run their own heat races as well as the same three divisions for asphalt cars. Features will be separate for pure stocks and street stocks with 4-cylinders running a combined feature. Also being planned is a King of the Hill type event for dirt vs. asphalt. Please give us your ideas and concerns and we'll do our best to incorporate and/or answer them. Also in consideration is a way to get Dirt Late Models on the card. Our concern is speed vs safety. Ideas welcome. What can we do to make this event a success? (And to prevent the suggestion, no, we aren't bringing clay in :o ) many thanks ramey

I don't know if it's feasible for the Keystone Open, but consider having small block dirt modifieds on the card sometime out there. Use the same rules that the tracks that run them on pavement up in New York and Vermont do. They run a minimum ride height rule and have them on the extra hard Hoosiers DIRT mandates for Syracuse.

How about a race for the "Modified" (E-Mod type) cars that run at Motordrome and Lake Erie!! Guys in those classes seldom run both tracks due to the traveling distance, but Clearfield is half-way between Motordrome and Lake Erie, so I would think you could draw from both track's regulars. I don't know if the rules at those two tracks are exactly the same, but I would think close enough to work something out. Walt

Make the tires available for free to encourage more drivers to try the surface. This worked in the past and will again. If you want to have a regular weekly show next season, you must provide the opportunity for those that have never run asphalt before to do this at the lowest possible cost to the competitor. Rob, just do it.

i hate to bust anyone's bubble but there is more to it than just putting tires on a dirt car you need a 5.13 gear and 8 inch wheels and i don't know anyone around here that has a gear like that, everyone i know runs between a 6.00 and a 7.00 for tracks like hummingbird and a.m.p .so figure the cost of a set of gears and at least 6 new wheels plus the cost of tires you are talking some serious money . i might be wrong but i don't think i am .

We are researching what made the Keystone Open a packed event in 1995 and 1996. Good point on the gearing. Racers are pretty resourceful when it comes to finding parts (i.e. a 5.13 chunk for a 9" floater). If the gearing is a bit high numerically and the car is handling good enough to hit the chip at the flagstand, it's a successful experiment! ramey

I do know the BRP tour tested big block mods at Lake Erie for a race, however could not come to agreement to an event. It had support of manufacturers and the like. They were crazy fast and a ton of fun to watch. Maybe contact the BRP tour folks and see what they might be open to... Just. A thought... Not just gambling on a class, but a supported field as well. Not the first time to be on asphalt, but likely the first around here. The racers seemed very open to it as well.

They have a regular weekly class of dirt mods on asphalt tires at Mahoning Valley Speedway out east. Looking at their results thy get some decent car counts.

I think there were some cars from Hagerstown there for the open also. I remember Cheyenne Reed there once in his super stock and he ran well. I know guys who run the small dirt tracks that have gears for big tracks in the pure stock class.

Who was that Spencer from Berwick who ran street stock at Clearfield those years of the Keystone open? I know he brought his asphalt street stock and a dirt super stock.

Lets see if we can solve two of the three issues - wheels and tires. Dirt Street Stocks in this area run 10" wheels so run the wheels that are on your car. You can run your dirt tires on the asphalt, but they will wear pretty quick or you can pick up a set of "gently used" (as Ramey put it) 10" slicks for a pretty nominal cost. I don't have the final details, but the most it will be is $160 for a set of 4 tires. Now for Dirt Pure Stocks, they run an 8" wheel. So, run your wheels and either your dirt tires or again a set of 10" slicks. The Big 10 Super Stocks Tour (NY) runs 8" wheels with 10" slicks and have not had any issues. Let me know if this makes sense or if I'm missing something on the wheels and tires.
As for the gears, CNB is a bigger track and you will likely want to run less gear, but I believe that you also run much higher RPM than the asphalt guys, so I can't give you any recommendations there. Any other thoughts?

5.14 vs 6.00 is 15%, which puts a 6000 rpm lap time at 7009 rpm. Keeping in mind the car may or may not be dialed that puts a car at 6500-6750 or so. Pretty reasonable for one special.
