If shatz had to drive on the rutted up tracks that all the old time greats had to drive on he would be nowhere near a good as he is. The sprint guys were crying at the world finals about the track conditions and they wernt bad at all. Plain and simple if they wernt driving on a sheet of glass tracks every night kinser might still be on top.

How do you figure? Look at all the old videos. The kinsers Jac and Sammy goin at with 2 foot ruts coming out of the turns doing wheel stands down the front stretch and still going all out. Now this guys won't run on anything rougher then interstate 80. These cars now days are setup and the driver gets in and goes. Back then they actually had to handle the car.

I started going to races 30 years ago. Tracks were slick as whale snot most of the summer all the way back then, too. You old folks LOVE your revisionist history.

I'm not going to say if the skill of drivers today or yesteryear is or was better.  I do think there are more drivers in general who have the skill and quality equipment, to win today then yesteryear's.

 

My earliest memory of thinking about who's good and who is not is Lou Blaney in a Big Block modified.  Before that it was watch the race and have fun with the excitement you get out of it.  I remember Big Block races having many many more cautions years back then today.  It amazed me to watch Lou Blaney start in the back, pick up a car or two on the start, then another caution and the pick up of another spot on the restart, and another caution and he's get two more. before you knew it with so many cautions and his skill to grab a spot or two every caution, the crowd and myself too would be cheering him on for the lead.  I'd often wonder what would happen if the cautions did not happen.  But back then they did and he did.

I know I'm going to get ripped hard for this but I don't give a fuk, I honestly think the prolific winners in the 60,70,80,90's were winning their races out of the garage . Now everyone can just buy the good shit

Way to go Legend, you are dead on! Most of the racers i knew BUILT their own cars yes in a garage.. Broke a part go to a junk yard or make one. We put a lot of pride in our work. You guys bash Legend for how he races. But at least he"s out there having fun.

The jist of what I wrote was Lou Blaney was the first driver I began to watch because of his superior driving skill.  It was his skill which first caused me to think about why he was so very good.  Your a very good wordsmith and I think probably write on here only for the sake of debate and to see who you can get a rise out of by underhanded signifying comments.

Thirty years ago when I watched races I never thought about how track conditions effected the outcome or who won because of skill.  I only watched as a seldom fan the same as I'd watch baseball or football.  

 

But I do have hands on experience fixing and using parts made, reconstructed and redesigned in that era by Lloyd Latch.  My experience with race parts he made or modified is what made me first use as an expression of admiration for the skills of racers say,  "Mr Latch is the smartest man in the world.".

 

Today much of who runs up front and who runs in the back is determined by who can best afford to buy from a catalog.
