Damn man i wish we had smooth as glass tracks back then. Just trying to explain what it was like back then. Where you even born yet. And no it is not revision it is reality.

My first auto race was in 1982. They weren't these crazy rutted up messes, either. Even "smooth" dirt tracks are bumpy as hell, but they don't have huge ruts and dips and such.

You can do tacky and smooth. The previously mentioned upper Midwest has been doing it for years.

This is funny. I remember back in the day. On any given Friday night at lernerville after 6 divisions, wow remember that huh, nobody would have the balls to do that today. Ouch would have to get on the grader and knock down the inches hi curbs in the corners. Some nights the cushion would just eat cars.

Legend. I agree 100%. Back then, I don't know if anyone spent the time in the garage as they do today. I also believe that is what made those racers so good.

Shatz and half the other drivers wouldn't even pull their car out on this track let alone race on it.

Earliest I remember is going with Grandpa, Dad and my big brother and seeing what I remember as this type of car being raced.  It was the only that kind of car on the track.

https://www.google.c...OBXnGEW6vCInlM:

Anyone remember who drove the business coupe?  I remember it sticking out like a sore thumb taller then all the rest of the cars.  It was in the 50"s I think the track was paved because I don't remember it as dirt or dirty.  Those memories are why I'm writing on here today.   As probably many of you who read and write on here, I sure do miss Dad and Grandpa.

edit:  the car I remember was darker blue with white lettering on it, but I could be wrong about the car color.

Dirtstudent do you remember the name of the track.

Yes it's Canfield and the drivers name was if I spell it right, Daugerty in the business coupe.  I again went to Canfield in the early 60's when a friend ran a tow truck there and then later after a short time in the military and a longer time in bars after discharge to Sharon in the late 60's and early 70's.  Then on to marriage kids and back to watching because it was good family entertainment.  That lead to getting into racing and now addicted to figuring out how the darn things go around a track.

It's an addiction, I know I can control it but just ain't found the right substitute for it yet.  Some day I'll move on to something else, yeah I keep telling myself that ... :)

Saddest thing to happen to me in awhile was when just yesterday I was talking to a local sprint driver and he asked me if I was at Susquehanna Sunday.  I about sank to the floor knowing I forgot about the race and didn't go.  ya know, ..........ever had the shakes? ... :)

Oh well, just made my reservations tonight for Fort Wayne.  If you have never been there it's two days of solid practice and racing from 10 in the morning till it's over.   If you ain't never been indoors when an engine let loose, you ain't never experienced good ole oil smoke.

I read a lot on here from racing fans.  If your a racing fan, why the heck weren't you at the Pig Barn in Columbus on Saturday watching indoor kart racing and why were you not at Susquehanna Sunday????????????

You either are or you ain't into racing.  I'd bet either Rick or Mike or both were at Susquehanna Sunday.

Dirtstudent i will ask my racing friend if he knows him he raced at Canfield in the early 60"s. He also raced at Butler and Mercer. I didn"t start until 69 for a whole season and that was Mercer and some at l"ville. Would love to see a race inside but my health has other plans. I also say i"m going to find something else to do but when spring comes i"m back at it again.

Speaking of refusing to race i rember I believe it was 1995.We had a trading card with a racetrack on it. I think it was called Perry county speedway in hazard Kentucky. Well we were on our way home from Florida and decided it would be pretty cool to stop there to see a stars or hava tampa latemodel show. The guys refused to race because the track was bumpy and had some rocks. So they cancelled the show. But it was a track stuck way down in a hole and looked to be made from sand and sheet rock. But the view from up top looking down into the track was pretty awesome as a kid.

Good talking with you also. At my age it is getting harder to find racers that remember racing back in the day. Most all of my friends that are still around are from racing. I have been friends with some for over 40 years. How the hell did i get this old.

Dirtstudent2 you probably saw Chuck Daugherty in that car he also was known as Chargin Charlie Daugherty. He started out at Ransomville Speedway the first couple of years he raced they built a car and kept it in his sisters barn in Newfane,NY. Charlie lived in the Youngstown area in Struthers , he ran Canfield for a number of years in the stock class and was point champion but I don't know how many times. He ran late models in the early 70's but sadly he had a heart attack and passed away in his late 30's. Charlie was one of my first cousins. Thanks for the memories.

Just sitting here I did a google search on the speedway and here is what I found.

Sure looks like the area south of the Chrysler dealer with the long buildings on it may have been a track.  Maybe yes or maybe no, but I had fun looking for it.  Do you remember the track down in a hole, being next to a highway?

I can promise you, Lou Blaney didn't need cautions to win.  He was unbelievable, and crazy too.  You could see him get into the other driver's head, know when the mistake was coming and making the move before the other guy made the mistake.  I also saw him drop off the back of 2 at Lernerville in the modified and fly up catching a bunch of air in 3.  I can't remember how many cars he passed, but it was more than 2.  ...and he was old by then.

My dad drove late models in the early 70's at North Hills, Butler, Mercer, Blanket Hill, and occasionally Tri City. We won the last late model track championship at Blanket Hill.

You guys are comparing Schatz and the guys of today not wanting to race like they would have been scared to race back then on those tracks.  Did you ever stop and think that today they are going significantly faster, and things cost significantly more money than they did back then?  Breaking now compared to breaking then could mean spending $5,000 whereas back then it meant going to the local junk yard and snagging something American Picker style.

I mean youre comparing apples to oranges and, no I was not born back then so dont come after me with that, but also dont come after me with any "young whippersnapper" remarks.

I was only about 12 years old. I cant remember anything around the track. I dont even know if they ran regular shows or specials only.
