#427543 The death of the street stock...the 358 Late

Posted by TUNACAN on 13 December 2016 - 02:41 PM

A thought lately really has been on my mind, so Ill throw it out there.    The fact is, we have a class for every kind of car you want to build.   From a Ford Tampon to a Leaf Spring Bullet to a 1/2 Street stock, 1/2 Late model to a Full blown $ 80k race piece, with a wing, without a wing, you name it.

It is also a fact that they only thing happening is that we keep dividing the same car counts, and since this area uses mostly odd ball rules, it limits anyone else from coming in, or anyone here from traveling far in most classes.

Its no secret that the street stocks in Western PA are not like the street stocks anywhere else.   An IMCA/Wissota Street stock looks more like our pure stock with a street stock geometry, yet on a DOT racing tire.   They also have specials that average $ 2500-$ 7500 bucks to win, and get plenty of cars.  Here we have street stocks with twice the money in them, that race for 1/2 as much.

With that said...Most of the people I have heard who have stepped up from a street stock to these  crate lates, 358 lates, steel block lates, or aluminum block lates have done so because its a similar expense, and yet they can bring more $$ home at the end of the night no matter where they finish

My question is this...since we now have 4 classes of late models, and each of those classes on average pay more to a driver than a street stock, will this put a nail in the coffin of most tracks having a decent class of street stocks, and ultimately kill that class off?

I doubt anyone with half a chance to qualify for the Pittsburgher would be at Thunder Mountain, and not a lot of cars that follow the Penn Ohio, ran TM weekly, so I doubt it will effect much.  Good shows at both tracks no doubt

WTF is a Limited Super Late Model?    That's the worst oxymoron Ive heard of.

I see this class is allowing leaf sprung chassis and exploding carbon fiber wheels too.    Time to dig the old rot box out from behind the shed!

A couple times that questions have been asked of the track, they always seem to be front and center.    I can appreciate that.

I have turned down sponsoring a car because while I like the driver personally, his actions on the track do not represent the image I want to portray.  I don't feel a sponsor could be anymore liable than someone wrecking into a billboard would going after the advertiser.   I would say this....after making a huge scene such as this one, the last thing any business wants to see is their name on it.   In said example, if the billboard company let their billboards fall down, or grow up with weeds....its pretty clear the advertiser would not stand for such a shotty image of their company.

3799,

Racesaver isn't even popular in Western PA, so of course they wouldn't get huge car counts.  The largest group of Racesavers in the state run the PA 305 Sprint series.  Big Diamond, Hesston, Lincoln, Port Royal, Penn Can, Selinsgrove, Trail-Way, Susquehanna, and Williams Grove.  None of those are anywhere near Mercer/Pittsburgh, and with a race going on weekly, why would anyone want to stray from their series to travel 5 hours away to run?  Ill planned, yes, but definitely not a good judge of a class that has 80 some active registered drivers this season.

Its just splitting the state with a rule package.  Gives the western PA sprint drivers a lower budget class, and the eastern PA drivers a lower budget class.   Its not growing leaps and bounds with new faces, its in part because drivers are moving from other classes in.   Like moving 10 bucks from the left pocket to the right and claiming you have more money.
