Would it be worth to a team to purchased an annual $2500 charter each year for a guaranteed one of 15 possible guaranteed starting spots?   Features could still be limited to 20 cars, but if you didn't have a charter you'd only be guaranteed a start if just 20 cars showed.

Now you want tracks to hit up what few cars local that are still around in any class, for $2500 so they have a spot in a feature? At what tracks are fields in any class, (other than maybe the Lernerville Sportsman, which may change this year), have more than full fields on a regular basis?

In my opinion, Nascar really screwed the pooch on this one!  It might not have been quite so bad if they didn't cut the field to 40 cars.  I can think of hundreds of scenerios that can really bite them in the butt with this charter system.  Points mean next to nothing now for a new team.  Doesn't matter if Wood Brothers and Ryan Blaney are leading points half way through the year... they still have to worry about qualifying every week.  Instead of listing a bunch more, let's jump to the almighty "Chase" format...  what happens if Ryan Blaney makes the chase, wins a race in the chase, but doesn't qualify well enough for the next race in the next round?  Are they going to make a "Chase" racer sit out a race?  Think about it!

That's an interesting question...what if Ryan does make the chase...and it's very likely me might with that team behind him...what then?  I wonder if they even thought that far ahead?  Probably not because they don't figure a non charter team will make the chase, but Ryan just might...AND even if he does, what if he actually wins the championship?  Still doesn't mean they will get a charter for next year...

He could win a race in that round and advance.

Sure he can advance to the next round, but what if he doesn't qualify for one the remaining four spots? What then, does he keep on advancing in that round?  And the way I read it, suppose he would win the championship, still doesn't guarantee him a charter for 2017, unless NASCAR pulls a charter from someone else, which they can do.

Nah, just like the chase, it's a self-cleaning system.  With only 4 open spots per race, it's highly unlikely that any non-chartered team will qualify for enough races to qualify for the chase.  Do you really think that sprint/nascrap will run the risk of embarrassing themselves by exempting a team that could miss an elimination race.

My dad drove late models in the early 70's at North Hills, Butler, Mercer, Blanket Hill, and occasionally Tri City. We won the last late model track championship at Blanket Hill.

Well. It has defineately given the media something to talk about. I wonder how many times they said Charter teams. Over and Over. But, I guess right now its the thing to talk about in NASCRAP. Waltrips rambling and now this.

I like Waltrip as a person but as an announcer he does leave something to be desired. I like the newer racers in the box like Jeff Gordon because they seem to speak to the fans in a more detailed (maybe more intricate you might say) sense rather than just the obvious everyone who has ever watched a race knows. Not so much last night but last week I can honestly say I learned from Jeff Gordon when he was commentating and it was something I can carry over to my own racing. I know it sounds strange. But honestly the more they talk about the thought process in the car the more interested I am. I don't need Darrell telling me lap after lap that its going to get crazy. I know it is. I want to be in the drivers head. That is what Gordon and Harvick from last year seem to offer.

I agree with your take on Gordon.  Similar to what Brad Doty contributes to sprint broadcasts.

the only insight that Gordon has given so far is about Hendricks teams, if he wants to be good in the booth he better stop worrying about whats going on with his former team.

But you assume that nascrap cares about you and me.  Nascrap is actually going for the casual fan--the "fan" that you have to explain everything to every time.  Nascrap wants more "fans" who don't know what the white flag is, or that the blue and yellow flag even exists.

I have to agree with FanJim on that comment...us racing people are a very small percentage of the viewing audience...I never thought about it before but that is probably correct, they want more casual viewers, but that's the much larger percentage of the population.

The problem is that they are happy to alienate us, their core viewers, to try to gain the loyalty of those who are by definition not loyal.  What concerns me locally is that I see Lernerville following suit.

FanJim, I see both sides of the coin, we have to attract new people, new fans, there should be a better way to do it...and I believe that you just may see short/local tracks try to do something similar to what NASCAR is doing with charter teams...a lot ((not all)) may try to follow suit...especially struggling tracks...they could try and sell permanent spots for the year just to get operating money...don't jump on me for this, but I could see it possibly happening.

Again....... How the hell could a track that is struggling charge for a guaranteed spot in a field of 10 cars?! All you have to do is show up at 99% of tracks and you are guaranteed a spot in the feature.

What's the difference between a charter, and having to buy a crate to run at Lernerville?

The worst part is the 43 to 40 cars which nobody is really mentioned. Making that decision as late as they did is inexcusable.
